August 2008 | |
United Way of Santa Barbara County had a kick-off luncheon for the 2008/09 Pacesetter Campaigns Wednesday July 16, 2008. The insurance themed luncheon was held at Rodney's Steakhouse in Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort with President of AGIA Insurance Services, and United Way of Santa Barbara County's 2007/08 Community Campaign Deputy Chair, John Wigle as master of ceremonies. The tables were decorated with "bobble-head" figures of John Wigle holding different types of insurance. John opened the luncheon by reviewing the success of last year's Pacesetter Campaigns as well as describing some examples of United Way programs. Lynda Nahra, the Community Campaign Chair kept the crowd alive with an interactive word game that kept everyone participating during the entire luncheon. Lynda also shared about the duties of the Campaign Cabinet.
United Way's President & CEO Paul Didier explained the goals of the Power of Partnership Initiative™ and also covered some partnering programs for 2008, such as Pre-K Summer Institutes and the website volunteersbc.org. Pat Card Vasquez, AGIA's Campaign Chair encouraged the group by sharing the outstanding events that AGIA has planned for their employees. Pat mentioned a silent-auction, bingo and a raffle for airline tickets and hotel stays. Many great ideas came from brainstorming in groups. Each group read one or two ideas that their table thought could make their employee campaign even bigger and better.
The role of United Way Pacesetters campaigns are to model effective and successful campaign practices to the rest of the community before the Community Campaign kick-off at Day of Caring Saturday September 20, 2008. Guests at the luncheon represented: ABC Clio, AGIA, Bank of America, Community West Bank, Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort, L-3 Communications MariPro Inc., and Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care.

Albertsons Supports United Way at 2008 Fiesta
This year Albertsons became the presenting sponsor of Las Noches De Ronda during the Old Spanish Days Fiesta. The show took place at the Court House Sunken Gardens and consisted of instrumental and vocal performances as well as traditional Flamenco and Folk dance from many regions of Mexico. Larry Urzua, Deli Operations Specialist invited United Way to join in the fun. For three nights Albertsons provided a fruit stand to sell fresh fruit and bottled water to Fiesta enthusiasts. All proceeds benefited United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC). Volunteers from UWSBC took turns selling the assortment of grapes, mixed berries, cantaloupe and cucumbers. Those who came by the stand were thrilled to see a healthy alternative and were happy to know their money was going towards a good cause. Albertsons has a long history of supporting United Way programs and initiatives. In 2006 Albertsons became a major contributor to United Way of Santa Barbara County's Day of Caring event. This year the event will take place on September 20th and once again Albertsons will generously donate food for the kick-off breakfast at the Page Youth Center that marks the beginning of the annual volunteer event.
UWSBC would like to thank Larry and Albertsons for their continued support and for their contributions from the 2008 Fiesta! |

FITS Participants Showcase Their Talents at Family Fun Nights
The Fun in the Sun (FITS) program which ran from June 23rd to August 8th has come to an end but not before the participants shared their experiences with their families. FITS Family Fun Nights offered a way for families to come together to witness the positive impact the FITS program has had on their children. They also had the opportunity to meet the staff and community volunteers who provided an educational and fulfilling experience for all the participants. Each of the four participating FITS school sites including La Patera Elementary, La Cumbre Jr. High, Franklin, and Canalino showcased murals that they had been working on all summer. The mural projects, coordinated by the Cancer Center, demonstrated the importance of sunscreen and sun protection. The children were all given the opportunity to paint and color to create the murals and they were very proud to show off their art. Family Fun Nights also included a drumming performance assisted by Dancing Drum. The drum beats and lyrics of the songs reinforced the FITS 6 Pillars of Character message of Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. United Way of Santa Barbara County would like to thank all the volunteers of the FITS program for being positive role models in these children's lives. If you would like more information on FITS and the Lunch Bunch program, please contact Jen Bowman at 805-965-8591 or go to www.volunteersbc.org for volunteer opportunities. |

Thank You Report
United Way of Santa Barbara County was excited to send out the newest version of the annual Thank You Report to selected donors during the month of July. This year the Thank You Report (TY Report) was given a fresh new look with bright colors, photographs and layout. The TY Report allows United Way to thank its donors, volunteers and program partners all in one publication that both reduces cost and receives many complements. Some of United Way's supporters have indicated their desire to receive confirmation of their gift, whether it is by thank you letter or a publication like the Annual Thank You Report.
Some donors have indicated they would prefer other options. If you would like to opt out of receiving the Annual Thank You Report and would like to receive an electronic copy through email instead, please email Brenda Cali at bcali@unitedwaysb.org.
Thank you all for your continued support. We hope you enjoyed reading through the Thank You Report to see how United Way is working in this community!
