Community Dividends Awarded

Paul Didier with Michael Towbes at the Community Dividends event.

On Monday, November 14, 2005, Montecito Bank & Trust generously donated $1,000,000 to 106 non-profits in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties during a luncheon at the Four Seasons Biltmore.  At the 3rd Annual Community Dividends event, Michael Towbes and Rod Brown presented Santa Barbara County's United Way with a check for $10,000 for our work with Fun in the Sun.  Montecito Bank & Trust’s philosophy behind the event is that the “Community Dividends will have the greatest positive impact if awarded to a substantial number of organizations.”  Many other organizations supported by Santa Barbara County's United Way also received checks from the Bank.  A huge “Thank You!” to Montecito Bank & Trust for supporting Santa Barbara County’s United Way!

Fun in the Sun Spotlight

Forming special bonds at Fun in the Sun

Mariana Loya,  age 12, was often surrounded by younger children vying for her attention.  As a Counselor In Training at Fun in the Sun, she learned to work, befriend, and lead others at a level she had never done before.  She explains, “A lot of the kids here I wouldn’t have gotten to know better if I just saw them at school or somewhere else.”  The program was an eye-opening experience.

Mariana received the first place award this past summer in Fun in the Sun’s writing contest, where she wrote about her older sister and role model, Marcela.  Marcela is a recent high school graduate now attending Santa Barbara City College.

My Role Model by Mariana Loya

My role model has to be my older sister Marcela. I want to be like her when I grow up….  What I really like about my sister is that she’s not bad.  She never got in trouble when she was in school or at home.  She’s always helping my mom clean up around the house, helps my younger brother and I in our homework, [and] always does her chores.  She’s very responsible and she cares about everyone.

Anytime I need to talk to someone she is always there for me.  She tells me to stay in school and get good grades so I could get accepted into good universities.  She tells me to care about school and my future.

My sister… she’s going to be a great person and I want to be like her.  She really cares about me and loves me very much….  That is why she is my role model.

20th Annual Heritage Club Luncheon

United Way’s 20th Annual Heritage Club Luncheon was hosted by restaurant  bouchon santa barbara on June 8, 2005.  Thirty-eight Heritage Club members and guests were honored during an extraordinary wine country dining experience.  The elegant lunch was served as guests shared their stories and their personal commitments to United Way's ongoing success.

Heritage Club members Mike & Betty Noling.

The Heritage Club is made up of forward-thinking individuals who have expressed their long-term commitment to this community by naming United Way as a beneficiary in their estate plans.  Their gifts come in the form of Charitable Remainder Trusts, Gift Annuities, Pooled Income Funds, Philanthropic Funds, Bequests, and gifts of Life Insurance and Retirement Plans.  These gifts are invested in one of five Endowment Funds, which provide a solid foundation of perpetual support for Santa Barbara County's United Way, and the programs that benefit the neediest people in our community.

We thank Mitchell Sjerven and the bouchon staff, and Partnervest Financial Group and Business First National Bank for generously underwriting this special event.
