Community Assets

Sal Cisneros, CI YMCA President; Sinead Kerr, Program Assistant; Lisa Thomas Macrum, Program Director; Speaker James Vollbracht

On Tuesday, January 10, two meetings were held at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History  to discuss “The 40 Assets and School Performance and Climate”.  Healthy Assets is a long-term program focused on increasing the number of “assets” for teens.  “Assets” are the 40 key traits identified by the nationally recognized Search Institute of Minnesota, which helps teens to become successful adults.  United Way was founder and is a primary funder of this program.  The lead agency recruited, Channel Islands YMCA, organized the community meetings, where more than 40 schools and agencies sent representatives.  National speaker and author James Vollbracht informed the crowd how Assets helps both the teenager and the community.  The program is currently at Dos Pueblos High School, and we hope to expand the program into other Santa Barbara County schools.

For more information on Healthy Assets, contact Lisa Thomas Macrum at the YMCA at (805) 569-1103 x11 or via e-mail LisaTM@ciymca.org, or  United Way's Dana Goba at 805-965-8591 or via e-mail dgoba@unitedwaysb.org.

Going the Common Way

United Way will be using the common grant application (CGA) for its funding requests as of January 1, 2006.  We have joined 21 other funders to use the CGA.  Like many other grant makers, United Way will be adding questions to the end of the standard application to include a few specific areas that are not covered in the rest of the application to allow for better focus.

The Foundation Roundtable had revised the CGA for 2006, and it is available from the Nonprofit Support Center by clicking here.

Red Feather Ball Past Honorees

Stuart standing in front of the Stuart Taylor Community Center, United Way’s headquarters

Our dear friend Stuart S. Taylor was the recipient of the Abercrombie Community Excellence Award at the first ever Red Feather Ball in 1997.   Stuart served at least four different times on United Way's board and was instrumental in the effort to buy and remodel our headquarters.  In early 1995 when our office was devastated by floods, Stuart came to our rescue and helped us raise the money necessary to rebuild and keep our doors open.

Stuart with his children Clare, Stuart Jr. and Gwen

For his dedication and service to our community, Stuart was twice the recipient of our award for “Outstanding Volunteer of Time, Talent and Treasure for Leadership Giving.”  Stuart passed away on October 24, 2004, and his friendship and support is deeply missed by all of us at United Way.   Please join us on Saturday, October 14, 2006 when we celebrate Stuart Taylor and all of our All-Star Honorees of the past nine years at the 10th Annual Red Feather Ball at the Bacara Resort & Spa.
