Wishing you a happy New Year from all of us at Santa Barbara County's United Way! We enjoyed partnering with you in 2005, and want to thank you for helping us create a hopeful future for everyone in our community. We look forward to 2006 and continuing with the success of our community collaborations including Fun in the Sun, Character Counts, Success by 6, and 2-1-1. We hope to see you at our community events such as Day of Caring, Annual Awards Celebration, and Red Feather Ball. Thank you for your continuing support!
On Wednesday, December 7, 2005, United Way donors and volunteers gathered at Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Resort for the annual Holiday Bash. In attendance were many local non-profits including representatives from Catholic Charities, Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY), Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Sansum-Santa Barbara Medical Foundation Clinic, and Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care, along with other local agencies. Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care was honored by Annual Community Campaign Chair, John Romo, for its Outstanding Non-Profit Campaign”.
City Administrator and Deputy Campaign Chair Jim Armstrong unveiled the community-wide campaign results to date – celebrating that over 60% of the $3,002,000 2005-2006 goal has already been reached! Currently, $1,864,000 in total pledges with $1,485,105 unrestricted has been raised, with an average gift per donor of $273. The United Way Community Campaign kicked off at the Day of Caring on September 17, 2005 and will culminate in the Annual Awards Celebration on May 3, 2006 at the Four Seasons Biltmore.

On Friday, December 9, 2005, the KIDS Network of Santa Barbara County held its annual holiday luncheon. The luncheon honored Awesome Kids of Santa Barbara County”. Each child stood in front of a crowd of over 200 people and gave a short speech on why they were honored. Some of the local non-profit agencies in attendance were Pat Wheatley, First 5 Commission; Bill Batty, Family Service Agency; LuAnn Miller, Isla Vista Youth Projects; and Dean Palius, People Helping People. Two children in United Way programs received honorable mention, Sandhya Tillotson and Mariana Loya. Sandhya graduated from Dos Pueblos High School last year and received a $250 college scholarship from United Way by exemplifying Healthy Assets. Mariana received the first place award this past summer in Fun in the Sun’s writing contest where she wrote about her older sister and role model.
Ken Tompetrini has joined the board of directors at Santa Barbara County's United Way. Tompetrini has been the president and CEO of NAUTRONOX MariPro INC since 2002. Previously, he served as vice president for Litton's Space, Launch & Strategic Systems (now a part of Northrop Grumman). He is currently a member of the board of directors of the Santa Barbara Industrial Association and has also been a member of the board of directors of the California Space and Technology Alliance. Tompetrini has been involved with Santa Barbara County's United Way since moving to Santa Barbara in 1996. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in engineering, as well as a Ph.D. from Stevens Institute of Technology.
