On May 18, 2005, we celebrated our successful campaign year at the 82nd Annual Awards Luncheon. Held at the Cabrillo Arts Pavilion, over 200 guests were greeted with a walk down the red carpet and a paparazzi welcoming! After having a picture taken with Marilyn Monroe and receiving a sparkling bling ring or bow tie, the guests enjoyed a delicious lunch and awards program. Several awards were given to local businesses and individuals in recognition of their success and support for Santa Barbara County's United Way. It was an enjoyable afternoon where staff, volunteers, and donors celebrated a successful campaign year together! Some photos from the event are below. Please contact Whitney at 805-965-8195 or email wmicheel@unitedwaysb.org to have a picture from Annual Awards emailed to you.

Fun in the Sun is the best integrated summer enrichment program available anywhere at any price! It is designed for homeless and poverty level children living in the Goleta and Santa Barbara community, and it will begin Monday, June 27. Its major focus areas are to build positive character and self-esteem, improve reading skills and comprehension, and involve parents and the community. The program yields long-term results for the more than 1,000 local children who have attended Fun in the Sun since its inception in 1997. Fun in the Sun is a collaborative of over 20 public agencies, charitable organizations, and schools serving 244 children ages 6-15 at three different sites: Ortega Park, La Cumbre Junior High, and Hollister Elementary. In an 8-week session, children engage in a multitude of indoor and outdoor activities creatively geared to engage and reinforce learning that would otherwise languish over the summer months. They learn about their well-being, discover their world through field trips, find self-expression through the arts, and cultivate positive friendships.
As part of their College & Career Bound curriculum this summer, the kids at Fun in the Sun will be asked to think about what they want to be when they grow up. Volunteers can help with this exploration by serving as our guest speaker and talking about themselves and their profession. You can open the children’s eyes to career opportunities and help promote life-long learning!
Career Day speakers can address a group of children in sessions lasting 15-45 minutes. We can accommodate your schedule in the mornings or afternoons any time of the week, with Friday mornings serving as the best day to schedule.

Women’s Leadership is working to engage and encourage our kids by offering their support during enrichment and reading hours at Fun in the Sun. Volunteers support counselor-led activities and work with children one-on-one.
An orientation will be held at United Way from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 9. For more information, please call Carmela at 805-965-8591 or email cgalvez@unitedwaysb.org.
United Way's E-News will arrive in your e-mail box at the beginning of every month. |
