Pre-Kindergarten Summer Institutes Complete Another Successful Session
The next academic year is quickly approaching and United Way of Santa Barbara County is helping children prepare for a successful school experience. Last week, the Pre-Kindergarten Summer Institutes completed another dynamic and effective session, sending over 160 young children home with vastly improved social, language, learning and motor skills. This partnership, a collaborative effort between Healthy Start, the Santa Barbara School District, Isla Vista Youth Projects and United Way of Santa Barbara County, was implemented to address the critical need for early education in our community.
Did you know that there are a lot of kindergarteners entering the Santa Barbara School District unprepared for the academic experience awaiting them? Many of these children have minimal English language skills, and may not know how to use scissors, sit still in a circle, share, or cope with frustration. Without transitional help, such as the Pre-Kindergarten Summer Institutes, many of these children will struggle from their very first day of school and have an extremely difficult time ever catching up.
Pre-Kindergarten Summer Institutes are designed to familiarize children with classroom activities in a school setting and help them overcome the fear of being away from home. Primary emphasis is placed on building skills needed for kindergarten, improving English language skills, and engaging families in the educational process. Pre-K Institutes are currently held at nine Santa Barbara School District sites and at the Isla Vista Youth Projects Children's Center. These three-week programs are conducted on the campuses where the children will become kindergarteners to make their transition to school as comfortable and successful as possible.

BEGA/US Inc. Gives Fun in the Sun Carpinteria a Boost
On Wednesday, July 25th and Wednesday, August 1st BEGA/US, a lighting company located in Carpinteria, hosted groups of children from United Way of Santa Barbara County's Fun in the Sun program. Fun in the Sun is a summer enrichment program for poverty level or at-risk children here in Santa Barbara County. Jade Hitz coordinated the visit for BEGA/US, which included every participant served by the program in Carpinteria this summer. "It was our pleasure to host the visits with United Way's Fun in the Sun program. Maybe we'll see some future engineers from the group of kids that were able to participate," Hitz said.
During the visits, the kids had a chance to see the BEGA/US showroom and talk to one of the lighting design engineers. Participants also got a complete tour of the warehouse and the landscaped grounds surrounding the company. The warehouse tour included demonstrations with heavy machinery and explanations for all of the different tools and devices being used throughout the building. Before leaving, the kids were treated to pizza from Rusty's.
Thank you to Jade Hitz, Erma Zuniga, and all of the other BEGA/US employees that made this educational trip possible. |
United Way: Lending a Helping Hand
A 95 year old man with several disabilities and chronic medical conditions needed a personal assistant in order for him to stay safe at home. His closest family members live fairly close but out of town. He hired one of the personal assistants referred to him by a United Way of Santa Barbara County funded agency and was very satisfied. She took care of his needs within his home, but also drove and assisted him whenever he had a doctor appointment or other personal matters. With her help, and the help of United Way and the Power of Partnership™, he was able to stay as active as possible. | |
