Sheriff Officers called me because they caught my son with a small
amount of marijuana during school hours after lunch. Someone in his
class just prior to lunch provided the pot and he agreed to join him off
campus during lunch to smoke. As a result of his offense and later as a
condition of his sentence at Teen Court, I was required to participate
in the Parent Program.
Just to let you know I was a bit skeptical about the class going in and
wondered if it was going to be worthwhile. What a pleasant surprise for
me. I had never been to a group therapy session before and had no idea
what I was in for. I liked the themes for each meeting that drew focus to
a particular area. The people that speak out honestly and deliver real
life experiences sure let you know you are not alone in the “battle”
with your children when they make poor decisions.
The big benefit for me was hearing how people dealt with certain issues
that I had not tried before. Just when I thought I was trying
everything, and I did try many things on my son, someone would mention
what a book said, or what their friend said or what they did to handle a
particular situation. The realization for me was, my son, now a big 14
year old, still needing physical attention – hugs, physical play,
and more attention from Mom and Dad. I thought he was beyond
that and seemed to say he didn’t want it. We are giving it to him once
again, and he is surely responding. Without this class and input from
other parents, I surely would have not gone back to the softer, physical
side of loving our teenage son.
The added benefit of the Parent Program is getting the parents to look
inward, at themselves, to see if we are truly honest with our time and
support of our children. Getting parents beyond their own issues, and
finding effective ways to support and nurture their children will have
a huge impact on both the parents and the children. This program has made
a difference in the lives of our family.
