United Way of Santa Barbara County hosted its Annual Awards Luncheon on
May 21, 2003, recognizing top volunteers and companies who raise funds
to help hundreds of programs throughout Santa Barbara County.
Debby Davison, Master of Ceremonies, stated, "This award ceremony is our
way of showing our appreciation to those who made United Way's
accomplishments possible. Thank you for your efforts in raising money to
provide for children in poverty, the disabled, frail seniors, families
in crisis, and so many other local people in need."
The program was opened by Rick Nightingale, President of the Board of
Directors, who noted that this was the 80th year of United Way's service
to Santa Barbara County. He also gave special recognition to volunteers
who had served United Way for 50 years: Earl Damitz, Wallace Drew,
Tom Brashears, and Stuart Taylor.
Ron Werft, President & CEO of Cottage Health System and United Way's
2002-2003 Campaign Chairman, also thanked the volunteer Campaign Cabinet
members, who helped to raise $2,934,516 in total gifts, with $233 as the
average gift, and 34% participation. Werft handed over the baton to next
year's Campaign Chairman, Mike Brown, County Administrator of County of
Santa Barbara.
Werft credited United Way's Campaign Executives for their outstanding
achievements: Jennifer Gann, Jack Juntunen, Dave Jochman, Martha
Lindberg, Mary Minore, Lyra D. Monroe, Kerstin Stuart, Walter John
Tanner, and Randy Weiss.
