Volunteers and Supporters Honored at Annual Awards Luncheon

United Way of Santa Barbara County hosted its 81st Annual Awards Luncheon for the 2003-2004 Community Campaign on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center. Master of Ceremonies Debby Davison, KEYT television newscaster, presided at the Hollywood-themed event that attracted over 200 guests.

"Academy Award" recognition was presented to local supporters and volunteers in acknowledgement of outstanding service to the 2003-2004 Community Campaign. Award winners were chosen from 28 categories with five deserving nominees in each. The Red Feather Ball Volunteer Award was presented to race car legend and United Way volunteer Andy Granatelli and his wife Dolly. The Red Feather Ball raised over $100,000 for the Fun in the Sun youth program.

Community Campaign Chair Mike Brown, Administrator with the County of Santa Barbara, announced that $2,936,764 was raised in total gifts, which exceeded United Way's goal of $2,935,000, with an average gift of $248 and 29% participation. Brown was congratulated for his tireless efforts to make the campaign such a success. Brown handed over his chairmanship to Henry Dubroff, Editor and Publisher of Pacific Coast Business Times.

Endowment Committee Chair Diane Doiron awarded Mike Bergquist the Endowment/Gift Planning Volunteer of the Year award. Volunteer Review Chair Karen Anne Platt presented Steve McGovern of Thiele and McGovern with the Outstanding Community Investments/Fund Distribution Volunteer award.

Charles and Gail Lucky were presented the Alexis de Tocqueville Award for Outstanding Leadership Giving in the 2003-2004 campaign year. Tom Brashears received the award for Outstanding Volunteer of Time, Talent and Treasure for Individual Leadership Giving. A past president of the board of directors, Brashears was honored for his 50 years of volunteer service to United Way last year. Chairman Brown acknowledged the efforts of over 60 volunteers who were part of the 2003-2004 Campaign Cabinet.

Longtime volunteer Bob Uradnicek was acknowledged for the many technical talents he brings to United Way.
