United Way Kicks Off Community Campaign with 15th
Annual Day of Caring: Volunteers Help over 50 Charities on Saturday,
September 16, 2006 at Santa Barbara County's Largest Volunteer Day
On Saturday, September 16, 2006, United Way of Santa Barbara
County kicked off its Community Campaign to raise pledges to support a
local network of health, human, and community building services at the
15th Annual Day of Caring. This event provides local non-profit
agencies with “hands-on” work assignments from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A rally at 8:00 a.m. at the Page Youth Center in Goleta kicked off the
annual event. United Way's 2006-2007 Community Campaign Chairman, Jim
Armstrong, greeted more than 1,000 volunteers and announced United
Way’s Campaign goals for 2006-2007, along with the results of early
Pacesetter pledge campaigns.
Volunteers proceeded from the breakfast, which was sponsored by Cox
Business Services, to community service assignments such as
landscape work and plantings, painting, habitat restoration, and office
work for three to five hour work assignments at 50 charities in
Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Santa Ynez.
Over 1,000 volunteers signed up to participate, including young people
from local schools, families, churches, and community service groups.
Some of the larger volunteer teams came from Westmont College,
Raytheon, City of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, Santa
Barbara City College, and County of Santa Barbara.
Work projects included making set and props for Boo at the Zoo for Santa
Barbara Zoo; creating adobe bricks for the reconstruction of El
Presidio for Santa Barbara Trust for Historical Preservation; habitat restoration at the Coal Oil Point
Reserve for the Santa Barbara Audubon Society; cleaning and gardening
around Canalino School in Carpinteria; and cleaning and gardening a park for
Santa Ynez Valley People Helping People.
The purpose of Day of Caring is to provide direct and indirect
benefit to people in need by providing organized volunteer hours to
charities. Last year, volunteer services were valued at over $200,000.
The contribution of services Day of Caring provides goes a long way
to make up for lost funds for charitable organizations hard hit by
budget cuts and reduced cash donations.
