Santa Barbara County's United Way recently held its 2002-2003 Holiday
Report Meeting at Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort. It was chaired by
Ron Werft, President and CEO of Cottage Health System and head of Santa
Barbara County United Way's Annual Community Campaign.
Werft stated, "As the season of giving approaches, it is my pleasure to
thank those who have given so much to help our community. Many long
hours of planning, creative thought, and hard work have helped to make
Santa Barbara County United Way's Annual Campaign a success so far. To
date, $2,006,088, or 68.5%, has been raised towards our goal of
$2,933,000 in total gifts, $208 average gift, and 37% participation. To
date the average gift is $230 and participation is at 35%. The final
campaign report will be made on February 20, 2003 at our Victory
Celebration at the Four Seasons Biltmore Resort."
Special recognition was presented in several "star" categories.
MariPro,
Inc. received the "Rising Star" award for conducting their first United
Way campaign. Additionally, Ken Tompetrini, CEO of MariPro, joined Santa
Barbara County United Way's CEO Club. On behalf of Fire Chief John Scherrei and County Chief Administrative Officer
Mike Brown, Dr. Jim
Broderick, Director of the County Health Department, accepted the "Super
Nova" award for County of Santa Barbara employees who hold the honor of
the largest campaign this year. County employee contributors added
another $8,000 to last year's total by raising $258,091.

The "North Star Award", given in recognition for exceptional guiding of
a United Way employee campaign, was accepted by campaign co-chairs Sandy Cocklin and
Brad Cowie of Santa Barbara Bank & Trust. Employees of
Santa
Barbara Bank & Trust raised $182,986.
"The Star Light Award", awarded for supporting the efforts of the
not-for-profit sector was given to Girl Scouts of Tres Condados, which
was accepted by Kirby Gillespie. The Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care of
Santa Barbara also received this award, which was accepted by Pat
Snyder.
"Shining Stars" for consistent stellar campaign performances were
presented to Vetronix, Nordstrom, Raytheon Electronic Systems,
City of
Santa Barbara, AGIA-Association Group Insurance, and Santa Barbara City
College.
Fundraising progress reports were also given by Karim Kaderali of
Santa
Barbara Axxess; Chuck Bishof of Agile Technologies; Tom Thomas of
Santa
Barbara Bank & Trust; Frank Randall of Merrill Lynch;
Linda Armstrong of
Wells Fargo Bank; Karl Hutterer of Museum of Natural History;
John Romo
of Santa Barbara City College; Michael Harris of County of Santa
Barbara, and others.
"Rock Star" awards were given to corporate leaders who performed
outrageous acts to help raise more money in their company campaigns.
Individuals recognized were David Lamkin of Santa Barbara Regional
Health Authority, Lynda Nahra from Goleta National Bank, and
Ron Biscaro,
CEO of St. Francis Medical Center.
The festive event was attended by a crowd of over 200 volunteers who
enjoyed holiday music performed by Debbie Denke.
United Way's 2002-2003 Annual Campaign will conclude with a Victory
Celebration on February 20, 2003 at the Four Seasons Biltmore Resort.
