A
Benefit for United Way's Community Collaborations
On
Saturday, October 8, 2005, United Way friends joined in celebrating the extraordinary
contributions of Abercrombie Community Excellence Award honorees Larry Crandell
and KEYT-TV. Excitement filled the air as guests gathered at the Coral
Casino, the site of the 9th Annual Red Feather Ball. And knowing that Larry Crandell
would be speaking, there was great expectation of laughter and cheer filling the
room. The sounds of Soul City Survivors kept the party going into the night.
A VIP reception at the Biltmore opened the evening. Past and present honorees
and chairs joined Alexis de Tocqueville Society and United Way Board members in
toasting Larry Crandell and KEYT-TV. The group then moved through the red carpet
entrance to the red feather themed wonderland that makes the ball so unique each
year.
New this year, Counselors-in-Training Angelica and Daniel met
guests as representatives of United Way's Fun in the Sun enrichment program. Angelica
spoke later in the evening's program about her six years as a Fun in the Sun participant.
The impact on her life has been significant: Angelica hopes to one day work as
a paid counselor to help other children experience the educational and recreational
activities Fun in the Sun provides to low-income children.
Proceeds from this gala underwrite United Way's collaborations which focus
on strengthening our community through our power of partnership. Fun in the Sun
is the best example of how your United Way is uniquely positioned to bring the
best resources and organizations together to provide solutions to community needs.
United Way of Santa Barbara County accomplishes more than what money alone can
provide.
Special thanks go to our Honorary Chair Michael Towbes, who was there
with his wife, Anne Smith Towbes. Anne accepted the award this year on
behalf of KEYT-TV.
Many of our past organizational recipients of the Abercrombie Community Excellence
Award were represented by staff in attendance, including Montecito Bank &
Trust; Cottage Health System; Cox Communications; Raytheon
Company; Westmont College; and Santa Barbara Bank & Trust.
Next year's 10th Annual Red Feather Ball will be an all-star celebration bringing
together all of the past recipients of the award. These honorees include:
