It was a full house as hundreds of South
Santa Barbara County residents painted the town red once again on
Saturday, October 12th, 2002 when they came to the Four Seasons
Biltmore Resort's Coral Casino to pay tribute to Andy Granatelli
and Cottage Health System for decades of community service.
Ladies in red and red feathers everywhere were the theme. Red roses
donated by Westerlay Roses set the stage, spilling out of black
community chests in the center of the tables.
From this year forward, the Community Excellence Awards will be known as
the Abercrombie Awards for Community Excellence in honor of Stewart
and Katherine Abercrombie for their extraordinary support of this
event and United Way.
Debby Davison did a great job of getting the audience's attention
by withholding the Angels/Twins score until the crowd quieted. She
brought the room to a hush for auctioneer Joe Howell, who
entertained and cajoled the crowd into bidding for wonderful trips and
sponsorships of our Fun in the Sun kids. After the program honoring Andy
Granatelli and Cottage Health System, the crowd hit the dance floor to
the great dance music of the Stardusters Big Band. A great time
was had by all!
The Annual Red Feather Ball underwrites Santa Barbara County United
Way's Linkage Programs - a unique collaboration that teams 53 existing
public and private services to solve local community problems.
Currently, we have 10 Linkage projects under way.
