December 2007
fireLocal Organizations Help United Way's Southern California Wildfires Recovery Fund

In California, wildfires are not a new occurrence. Each year dry winds and hot temperatures bring fuel for fire season. In October 2007 the fires were unprecedented. Twenty-four seperate fires burned more than 500,000 acres within seven different counties, causing several deaths and injuries and leaving more than 2,000 people without homes.

United Way of San Diego County started what has become known as the Southern California Wildfires Recovery Fund. Bringing together eight United Way's throughout Southern California, including United Way of Santa Barbara County, the fund will help to help rebuild the communities that lost so much in these fires. Gifts to United Way Southern California Wildfires Recovery Fund will support services that help to bring a community back better than before (e.g. housing, mental health, quality child care, job training).  United Ways will activate local volunteer committees of community leaders to review applications from partner agencies and develop strategies to address the long term needs of those affected.

We would like to extend a very warm thank you to some of the local organizations who's corporate offices have helped make a lasting impact on the lives of the community members affected by the Southern California Fires: Nordstrom, Lockheed Martin, CB Richard Ellis, Wells Fargo Bank, and Costco. Thank you very much for your generosity, caring, and support.

United Way of Santa Barbara County's Endowment and Gift Planning Services is fortunate to have a premier group of volunteer estate and financial planning professionals who work to promote our programs and assist with the technical questions relating to charitable gift planning.  At a recent committee meeting, this formidable group reviewed their 2007 results which included complex life income plans utilizing real estate and other appreciated assets.  When the meeting adjourned, the committee joined in the festive celebration of their successful year and the camaraderie established through their volunteerism.

Through community partnerships, United Way of Santa Barbara County and the Power of Partnership provide programs like 2-1-1, a program of Family Service Agency, that are helping residents throughout the Santa Barbara County area on a daily basis. These partnerships build a stronger and more stable environment for everyone. Last year a middle-aged woman who suffers from both physical and mental disabilities, and has a long history of substance abuse resulting in pending drunk driving charges, hit the proverbial "rock bottom" and slit her wrists in an attempt at suicide. As she reconsidered this fatal attempt, she called 2-1-1 to get help. Their staff was able to provide crisis counseling as well as referral to the psychiatric unit at her local hospital for voluntary inpatient care. Several days later, this woman contacted us again, this time, to express her gratitude. She acknowledged that calling the number and pursuing treatment at her local hospital was her first step toward recovery. This woman continues to use 2-1-1 as part of her support system, and calls from time to time for brief counseling and referrals.
