A Record Breaking Year for
Cottage Health System

Cottage Health System, under the leadership of Vicky Krene, Campaign Chair, and Patrice Ryan, Campaign Co-Chair, is having its best campaign in history. And that is saying something! In the 2008 campaign, Cottage showed its incredible commitment to the community by pledging over $124,000! That was a $12,000 increase in funds raised from the previous year.

This year, they have blown those results away! With over 650 employees joining together to pledge in this year's 2009 Cottage Campaign, they have had a $22,000 increase in donations and counting! Thus far, Cottage Health System has raised over $145,000 to help local children, families, and seniors in need.

Thank you to each donor who pledged their support. A special thanks to this year's tireless campaign committee of Vicky Krene, Patrice Ryan, Annice Spangler, and Cristy Crisenberry. They displayed incredible leadership, hard work, and dedication.

AGIA Insurance Services Making a Difference in Our Community!

AGIA

AGIA Campaign Committee at Balloon Pop

This year, AGIA Insurance Services completed another goal breaking United Way campaign in the month of October.  Pat Card-Vazquez and a very energetic United Way campaign committee led the way. AGIA Insurance Services reached $95,961 in corporate, employee and special event donations with 86% employee participation!

The Halloween themed campaign - "Giving is a Boo-tiful Thing" - kicked off with an all staff company meeting spearheaded by John Wigle, AGIA's President & CEO and United Ways 2009-2010 Community Campaign Chair.   The week long campaign had daily activities that brought community awareness, built team spirit and involved tons of fun.  The activities included a silent auction, tri-tip BBQ and bake sale, a balloon pop (pictured above) and a company-wide pizza lunch and raffle.

Over the past ten years, AGIA Insurance Services employee and corporate contributions have reached nearly $750,000 during the annual charitable giving campaign, making them one of our top supporters year after year.

In addition to supporting our community financially, AGIA Insurance Services employees have continued to take part in volunteer work this year.  In July, the company sent a team of volunteers to "Lunch Bunch," the volunteer portion of Fun in the Sun, and the company also participated in United Way's Day of Caring in September, the largest volunteer event each year in the tri-county area.

Montecito Bank & Trust Runs Their Best Campaign Ever!

MB&T

Montecito Bank & Trust Campaign Co-Chairs Vanessa Dominguez, Ambia Jeckell, Jamie Gilles and Kim Dominguez

For the second consecutive year, Montecito Bank & Trust has run its largest campaign ever.  This year the campaign included presentations at all branches and several special events.  This year's campaign total was more than $32,300 which included corporate a gift of $10,000.

Some of the events held were jail days at each location, a weekly raffle for vacation days, jeans days, candy grams, and the second annual "Uniting Spirits, Bidding for a Cause" wine tasting event.  In addition, some locations held their own special events to add even more fun!

Jail days were very fun for the employees, as they were able to lock their supervisor in their office until a pre-determined amount of money was raised.  This generated more than $4,000 towards this year's campaign.

The wine tasting event was also a great success in terms of offering a fun event for employees and raising money for the campaign.  In total, more than 75 employees attended and raised more than $4,600.

United Way thanks this year's Co-Chairs Ambia Jeckell, Jamie Gilles, Kim Delgado, and Vanessa Dominguez along with President & CEO Janet Garufis and owner Michael Towbes for a great campaign this year.

Tim Gamble Retires from Endowment Committee

Gamble

United Way's Endowment and Gift Planning Services Committee bids farewell to Tim Gamble, as he retires at the end of this year.  For more than 20 years Tim has been an integral part of this committee, assisting United Way donors with complex charitable giving plans.  Tim is the Regional Fiduciary Officer and Trust Administrator for Northern Trust, Santa Barbara and brought his vast experience to benefit our community through his involvement with several local nonprofit and professional organizations.

As a United Way volunteer, Tim has also served on the Investment Performance Review Committee and the Campaign Cabinet, and in 2002 he was recognized for his contributions as the recipient of United Way's Endowment Volunteer of the Year award.  In 1990 Tim and his wife Linda became members of the Heritage Club by leaving their legacy to this community through a provision for United Way in their estate plan.

We thank Tim Gamble for his personal commitment to the people of this community through his many years of volunteerism and support, and we wish him the very best in his retirement.

Fun In The Sun - An Impactful Summer!

FITS
A Fun in the Sun group visits Build-A-Bear

Fun in the Sun 2009 was a summer of growth and many successes. Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast became a Lead Agency for the first time and managed their own site this year. Girls Inc. of Carpinteria and Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara continued to deliver outstanding services and program management between their three sites.

FITS was able to serve 364 children, the most in the program's thirteen-year history. In addition, students were introduced to new activities and experienced many first time events in their lives, from losing a first tooth to learning to swim, and in some cases learning the English language.

Participants also reached and exceeded all of the goals and targets for reading, enjoyment of reading, and various aspects of character development.

Although these achievements are impressive, perhaps the most remarkable accomplishments were those that are not quantifiable. As one third grade participant said, "I made new friends and met new people who made me feel better about myself." For that, the community should take satisfaction in knowing they made a difference in the lives of local children.

VISTAs Complete Volunteer Management Certificate Program

Volunteer Cert

Matthew Weisner and Kellen Skersies, the two AmeriCorps VISTAs at United Way of Santa Barbara County, recently completed the Volunteer Management Certificate Program at the Non-Profit Support Center in Santa Barbara.  Presenter Leeza Charleboix led the dynamic three-day discussion of best practices in volunteer management, including recruiting and training, retention and recognition of volunteers, developing job descriptions, risk management, and fund raising for volunteer programs.

Representatives from 13 local non-profit and faith based organizations were in attendance and graduated from the program in November.  Pictured are the various non-profit representatives and program leader Leeza Charleboix of the Ty Warner Sea Center.
