Fun in the Sun 2009 - A Huge Success!
Fun in the Sun (FITS) 2009 concluded on Friday, August 7, after an incredible duration of seven-weeks. The program served 364 poverty-level children at four sites in Santa Barbara County, with three Lead Agencies implementing programming and providing oversight of the four sites. Girls Inc. of Carpinteria hosted FITS at their site in Carpinteria, Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara ran two sites at Franklin Elementary School and Ellwood Elementary School, and a new partnership with Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast enabled new possibilities with the program at La Cumbre Jr. High School.
Through the collaborative efforts of nearly 60 public and private organizations, this year's program maintained many FITS traditions, as well as introducing many new elements to participants and their families. FITS kids participated in new programming such as Manners & Courtesy education, Conflict Resolution curriculum, Health and Nutrition lessons, and Financial Literacy classes. FITS 2009 also included several first-time experiences for participants; many FITS participants experienced swimming, dancing, and fishing for the first time in their lives this summer. In addition, FITS students made their first visits to local college campuses to pique their interests in attending college one day.
United Way's FITS is a partnership of 56 private and public organizations. For a full list please visit our website.

Lunch Bunch, the one-hour mentoring program during the lunch period everyday at FITS, welcomed over 500 volunteers from 40 businesses and organizations in the community. FITS kids enjoyed the efforts and mentoring of these outstanding volunteers every day at each site. Many of these individuals and groups signed up for more than one lunch hour, brought lunch for their site, and donated several playground and craft donations to FITS!

Albertsons Holds Benefit for United Way at 2009 Fiesta Celebration

UW Staff Joel Dinan (L) and Paula Acosta (R) with Amber Ortiz, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust (middle)
For the second year in a row Albertsons set up a fruit stand to raise money for United Way during the annual Fiesta show at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. Once again this year the fruit stand was successful in raising money to support 84 programs and partnerships. Albertsons also supports United Way in several other ways. The company runs an annual workplace campaign, sponsors Day of Caring by providing all of the food for the morning breakfast, and has provided food for several Power of Partnership Initiative meetings during the past two years. United Way would like to thank Albertsons and their employees who have made this possible, particularly Stan Martinez and Larry Urzua. Stan has generously donated the fruit for this endeavor from his store at Five Points and Larry used his own personal time to assemble and disassemble the booth each day. Several other Albertsons and United Way employees also spent time in the Fiesta booth as cashiers. |

The event was held at the Harbor Restaurant on Tuesday, August 11th, and was sponsored by Franklin Templeton and Edward Jones.
Upcoming events for Young Leaders Society include volunteering at Day of Caring; partnering with the Santa Barbara Public Library for a book delivery program titled "Reading Is Fundamental"; and a networking and wine tasting event in the Fall.

United Way Internal Campaign Achieved 100% Employee Participation!
Joel Goforth and Steve Ortiz Compete in Bean Bag Toss
United Way of Santa Barbara County held its annual internal campaign and achieved great success! Staff participation was 100%, which helps support our unique initiatives and goals. The campaign was kicked off with an all staff BBQ of burgers and hot dogs. A golf putting challenge and bag toss game created a festive atmosphere. All staff members that donated at Community All Star level will soon get a car wash by senior staff members.
United Way Community All Stars (CAS) are individuals who have contributed a net of $500 or more undesignated to United Way of Santa Barbara County for three or more consecutive years. The incentive car wash should be fun - senior staff members will have water balloons tossed at them as they wash CAS employee cars! We hope this campaign story inspires local workplaces to have fun and team build with your annual United Way campaign.
