Fun in the Sun In Full Swing - Come Volunteer at Lunch Bunch!

FITS 09

Fun in the Sun is in action and better than ever! At each of our four sites, the kids are learning and having a fantastic summer. Some highlights have included a new financial literacy curriculum, field trips to public swimming pools, on-site gardening projects, reading, fishing field trips on the Goleta Pier, and of course, all the wonderful Lunch Bunch volunteers!

Fun in the Sun program is now in its fourth full week and we only have three weeks of Lunch Bunch left!  Lunch Bunch is the one-hour volunteer mentoring program at Fun in the Sun. Local employees and volunteer groups have the chance to interact with program recipients and act as positive role models for one hour each day during lunchtime.  The children served by the program rate this activity as one of their favorite parts of Fun in the Sun each year.

On average, parents of the participants work more than two jobs each.  This leaves little time for them to engage in family oriented experiences.  It is important for the kids to see that adult community members support them and care about their lives.  It is also important for participants to learn about different career paths they can pursue in the future and the importance of doing well in school.  These are a few of the many things the kids learn during their time at Fun in the Sun.

This year Fun in the Sun is serving 364 children at four sites: Girls Inc. (Carpinteria), Franklin Elementary School (Santa Barbara), La Cumbre Junior High School (Santa Barbara), and Ellwood Elementary School (Goleta).

There are still multiple days available for volunteer teams at each site.  Our goal is to have 10-15 volunteers at each site each day.

Please consider signing up a team from your workplace or a group of your friends.  Your one-hour commitment will make a big difference to the children in this program!

Wells Fargo Presents Corporate Donation!

WF 09
Joel Dinan of UWSBC with Jeff Pittman of Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo has presented United Way with a $10,000 corporate check.  This represents an increase of $2,000 over last year's gift. This gift has helped United Way to get off to a strong start to the 2009 campaign.  Wells Fargo has contributed $34,500 in corporate money over the past five years, in addition to more than $100,000 in employee donations to the United Way's Community Campaign. Corporate gift increases are especially important to us during tough economic times like these.  The additional funding will help us address growing community needs.

In addition, Wells Fargo employees have continued to participate in United Way's two major volunteer efforts each year, Fun in the Sun's Lunch Bunch and Day of Caring.  These local employees have engaged themselves in these activities for many years.

United Way thanks Jeff Pittman, Senior Vice President and Regional Manager of Private Banking, and the rest Wells Fargo's staff for their continued support!

United Way of Santa Barbara County Represented at National Conference on Volunteering & Service!

Obama

Michelle Obama addresses attendees at conference

On June 22-24, over 5,000 volunteer managers, nonprofit professionals, business leaders, and activists gathered in San Francisco for what proved to be an historic and star-studded National Conference on Volunteering and Service. And for the first time, two UWSBC staff members, Juli Askew and Angela Wallace, were there to absorb it all.

By far, the most exciting part of the three-day event was the Opening Session. Points of Light Institute CEO Michelle Nunn and Nicola Goren, the acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, kicked things off by welcoming leaders from the nonprofit, government, and corporate sectors.

Following their lead, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, rock star Jon Bon Jovi, California First Lady Maria Shriver, and several others, voiced their appreciation of the many "unsung heroes" of service who were in attendance.

But the highlight came with the arrival of Michelle Obama. "I feel like I'm with my people," the First Lady told the crowd. "Looking out at all of you, I feel nothing but hope for the future."  She continued to validate the crowd's efforts by stating "This administration doesn't just see service as something that transforms individuals or individual communities - but as a force with the power to transform this nation."

From all of the incredible speakers and performers to the outstanding workshops and roundtables, these two United Way staff members returned with a renewed sense of desire to continue to transform this community.  For more information and video footage, email Juli Askew.

Cottage Hospital Presents an Easy-To-Remember Test To Diagnose Possible Stroke Victims

With strokes, time lost is brain loss.  You can save a life if you know the signs of stroke, and you act  F.A.S.T. by following these simple steps:
  • Face:  Smile -- does one side of the person's face droop?
  • Arms: Have the person raise both arms. Does one droop downward?
  • Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Are the words slurred or unclear?
  • Time:  If any of these signs are apparent, call 911 or get to a hospital fast. With strokes, time lost is brain lost.
By acting fast, you can save a life.  For more information, please visit Cottage Hospital at www.cottagehealthsystem.org.
