Since its founding in 1960, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust has partnered with United Way of Santa Barbara County to provide critical human care services for local residents. Through annual campaigns, employees generously donate a portion of their salaries to help make a positive difference in their neighborhoods.

Santa Barbara Bank & Trust provides a 50% matching gift of employee contributions each year and, in 2008, the bank's corporate gift exceeded $56,000 - the largest United Way received.

"I'm proud of our employees and the bank for our long-term commitment to being community leaders," said George Leis, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust's President and CEO, in presenting the check to United Way. "In addition to their financial gifts, our employees are tireless volunteers and active participants with a number of local nonprofit organizations on an on-going basis."

Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, with 29 offices in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, is a division of Pacific Capital Bank N.A., a nationally chartered regional bank that operates three primary businesses: community banking, commercial and wealth management; and income tax refund products.

Charitable Gift Annuities - A Good Investment

Tired of seeing your 401(K) decline in value day after day?  Consider a United Way Deferred Charitable Gift Annuity to augment your future retirement income.  Here's how it works.  A Deferred Charitable Gift Annuity permits you to postpone the start date of the annuity for a specified period of time and still receive an immediate charitable deduction. Deferring the start date of your annuity increases the annuity payout amount as compared to a current Charitable Gift Annuity. The minimum period to defer payments is one full year.

Once you enter into a deferred gift annuity agreement with United Way, your payment is fixed at the time you sign the agreement, regardless of what happens in the market because your payments are guaranteed by the assets of United Way of Santa Barbara County.

For more information please contact our Gift Planning Services Officer Judy Goodbody, CFRE, IAR, CRTP at 965-8591 ext.120 or email jgoodbody@untedwaysb.org or visit our website at www.unitedwaysb.org/giftplanning.

The Power of Partnership Initiative would like to thank you for your involvement since its official kick-off in April 2008.  We are pleased to report that over 5,200 of your opinions on the future of local children, families, & seniors have been collected and continue to be analyzed as additional responses come in.  Your contributions have allowed the South Coast of Santa Barbara County, for the first time ever, to agree on a vision with prioritized goals and outcomes for children, families, & seniors.  Check the PartnershipSB website in the upcoming weeks to view community results.

The Power of Partnership Initiative is asking for your involvement as the community determines Strategies for Success for children, seniors, and their families on the South Coast.  You are invited to participate as we discuss how we can work together to create a better future for children, seniors, and their families in our community.

 My Healthy Child Strategy Launched!

My Healthy Child

Photo by Isabelle T. Walker of Santa Barbara Independent

"Pediatricians have a lot to say to parents of babies and toddlers but only 15 or 20 minutes to say it in. As a way out of this dilemma, First 5 of Santa Barbara County and United Way have teamed up to create a system for communicating some key points doctors need to share with families about their kids' health," writes Isabelle T. Walker of the Santa Barbara Independent in a recent article.

The system is called My Healthy Child. It consists of a website, a colorful development wheel and flyers on sleeping, eating, reading, and dental care, all in both English and Spanish.

The myhealthychildsb.org website is full of resources and information, plus links to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AMA), First 5 and other sites designed to support the education and health of young kids.

The goal of My Healthy Child is that the materials will eventually be found in every pediatric office in Santa Barbara County.  For now, they are available in the pediatric offices of all Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics sites, Sansum Clinic, the Santa Barbara County public health clinics, and the Children's Medical Clinic

Fun in the Sun 2009 Planning Underway!

FITS logo

Planning for the 2009 Fun in the Sun program is now in full force. The first Partners Meeting of the year occurred on January 29th in United Way conference room, where new ideas were born and excitement was contagious. The attendance of various businesses, agencies, and organizations was the best in years, proving that there is a growing interest in contributing to a program that really makes a difference in the lives of Santa Barbara County children. With over 30 organizations represented at this meeting, and a growing list of interested partners, we are confident that Fun in the Sun is evolving and expanding to help meet the needs of the underprivileged children in our community.

Fun in the Sun is a safe and supportive place for local kids.  The program focuses on improving reading skills and character development in a fun and creative atmosphere.  The kids learn about their well-being, discover their world through field trips, connect with positive adult role models, find self-expression through the arts, and cultivate positive friendships to last a lifetime.  The summer program runs all day for seven weeks at multiple
locations throughout Santa Barbara County.

For more information on Fun in the Sun, please contact Jenny Lewallen at 965-8581 x138 or jlewallen@unitedwaysb.org.
