A Bright New Outlook on an
Early Academic Future
One
day, a man came into Project Learn's tutoring center. In broken English
full of emotion, he told the director about watching his daughter,
Grasiella, struggling in school. She was referred to Project Learn
because of her low standardized test scores and poor classroom
performance. The man explained that he worked two jobs to support his
family and pay for the small apartment they called home. His wife also
couldn't speak English. Grasiella's parents wanted to help her and were
hurt by seeing her spirit suffer, but they didn't know what they could
do.
Project Learn is an exciting collaboration between United Way of Santa
Barbara County and Girls Inc. of Santa Barbara, along with 5 other
agencies. Its purpose is to measure and improve the academic performance
of 56 Fun in the Sun children through tutoring, homework assistance and
enhanced English classes for their parents. Through Project Learn,
Grasiella is starting to do well in school. The afterschool classes give
her the skills and confidence to achieve the high goals she's learning
to set for herself. She's not the only one who's going to school; her
mother is also taking Project Learn's ESL classes. Her father is proud
of his family and they all have a new bright outlook on their future.
