Mark*
was referred to a United Way of Santa Barbara County funded agency, Teen
Court, for multiple alcohol and drug misdemeanor offenses: possession of
less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of marijuana
paraphernalia. During the intake session, Mark stated that he felt he
was not harming anyone through his use of marijuana, and that it helped
him focus in school. Mark’s mother was terrified that she was losing her
son to drugs.
A jury of his peers sentenced Mark to Alcohol and Drug groups and random
drug testing. During the Alcohol/Drug Awareness groups, he would not
share any experiences or thought on his substance use. By the third
group, Mark began to actively contribute to the group and was very vocal
by giving feedback to many students.
Mark’s mother was required to participate in the Fighting Back Parent
Program. She stated that she was angry and fearful for her son’s future
prior to Teen Court. She felt that Teen Court and the Parent Program
have helped them to become better connected, and she felt the programs
re-affirmed to her how much influence she already had with her child.
Mark’s mother was pleased with the positive social interaction he had in
Teen Court, as well as at his community service site. Upon exit from
Teen Court, Mark stated that he was happy because he had not smoke
marijuana for 90 days, and he now has a good relationship with his
mother. Mark wants to continue to help other teens by participating in
the Teen Court Jury of Peers.
