Baby, You're the Best!
If you think Santa Barbara Bank & Trust (SBB&T)employees are cute now, you should see them at 6 months old! This year, SBB&T is holding a Guess the Baby Photo contest as part of their United Way campaign, running in July. Last year's SBB&T campaign was the largest United Way campaign in the private sector, raising over $214,000.
The baby photo contest is one of many ways that the bank drums up enthusiasm for supporting the community. Employees pay $5 to wear jeans each Friday until Day of Caring, September 15, with all 10 Fridays available for $40. SBB&T employees also use the campaign as a time to appreciate each other through Candy Grams-M&M's, Skittles, and trail mix sold for $1 each with a note attached for the recipient.
The fun events generate excitement, but employees remember that the campaign is really about helping people in need. SBB&T employees volunteered en masse at all four Fun in the Sun sites during the Lunch Bunch hour before the campaign kicked off. The bank also sends one of the largest teams to Day of Caring. SBB&T runs a Pacesetter campaign (concluding before Day of Caring), so United Way reports results from SBB&T, as well as other Pacesetters at the Day of Caring event. SBB&T also has an internal pacesetter group: executive management pledges early to set the tone for all bank employees. SBB&T employees attend United Way presentations to hear about community needs and also the success of their pacesetter group, which topped $40,000 for this year's campaign. With all of their support and enthusiasm, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust is on track for another great campaign.
| Maximum Nursery Supports Fun in the Sun Carpinteria
Maximum Nursery gave Fun in the Sun Carpinteria a boost with support from CEO Winfred Van Wingerden. Maximum Nursery is a wholesale flower company in Caprinteria specializing in Gerber daisies and biologically-controlled field flowers. The company distributes flowers to other wholesale businesses all over the country. Mr. Van Wingerden invited United Way of Santa Barbara County representatives to speak to employees about Fun in the Sun Carpinteria last week. Employees gathered around in the afternoon to hear about the newest site for our Fun in the Sun partnership, and how they can get involved through pledging and volunteering. Mr. Van Wingerden also pledged a generous personal gift to Fun in the Sun Carpinteria to support a child for the summer.
The Van Wingerden family got their start in the local flower business after moving to America from Holland in 1967. Maximum Nursery started in 1977 and Winfred Van Wingerden took over as CEO in 1982. Mr. Van Wingerden is very active in helping children and families. He supports Fun in the Sun Carpinteria because it serves local children and families in Carpinteria and delivers powerful academic and behavioral results. |
Local Businesses Support United Way and Their Community
United Way of Santa Barbara County would like to thank Zodo's Bowling and Beyond for providing a generous in-kind donation. Manager Rocky Honer states, "It is important that we give back to the community that we live in." Zodo's supports many local organizations and host parties and fundraisers at their facility.
United Way would also like to thank, Fly Above All Inc., Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Wheel Fun Rentals, Riverblue Salon Spa, and Santa Barbara Body Therapy Institute. These organizations have contributed in-kind donations to our workplace campaigns this month. Thank you for your support!
