United Way of Santa Barbara County Awarded
 Federal Learn and Serve Grant!

Service Learning

United Way of Santa Barbara County has been named a recipient of the prestigious federal Learn and Serve America/Summer of Service grant totaling $150,000 for Fun in the Sun 2010.

Half of the grant will go to Fun in the Sun-Summer of Service programming, and the rest will go directly to qualified FITS students through a $500 Summer of Service Educational Award (college
bond) to be earmarked for higher education.

Learn and Serve America is a national service program administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The goal is to engage students, educators and the community of all ages and backgrounds in service and service-learning to enhance education, civic participation and communities. The Summer of Service program is a new initiative that was established under the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act in April 2009.

Since 1997, Fun in the Sun has been the only long-term, results-focused, comprehensive, safe, no-cost, out-of-home, summer education and behavior improvement partnership for Santa Barbara's most impoverished, underserved and academically challenged children (ages 6 to 18) and their families.

Low-Income Children and Families Need Your Help This Summer!

Fun in the Sun Starfish

Despite (and because of) the recent federal Learn and Serve America/Summer of Service grant that United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC) has received for the Fun in the Sun (FITS) program for the next three years, the underserved children and families of FITS 2010 still face some challenges.

Due to the current state of the economy, the future success of FITS 2010 was not looking so bright prior to March 2010.  FITS' projected 2010 operating budget was to be cut in half compared to 2009.  Services would be cut to less than half of the usual number of participants (169 vs. 364), and the number of sites was in jeopardy of being reduced from four to three.

Now it comes down to this: just 100 more days before school lets out, summer kicks in and FITS kicks off its seven-week slate of comprehensive services.  Just 100 days to find $50,000 more dollars (12% of the total FITS budget) so FITS can operate at full capacity.
We are asking for your support of FITS 2010 to help us reach this goal. Because of the new federal Service Learning grant, local FITS students have an opportunity to receive $225,000 in education scholarships over the next three years - but only if we have the resources to operate at full capacity.  We need your help!

United Way's Young Leaders Society Participates In "United We Read" Program!

YLS Volunteers at Franklin Elementary School
United We Read

Twenty-one YLS members participated in the first United We Read program.  The event took place from 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. at Franklin Elementary School and kicked off with a breakfast with Principal Casie Killgore, and included an all-school assembly.

United We Read

YLS members were matched with one of the 21 classrooms at Franklin Elementary (Kindergarten to 6th grade).  Each YLS member brought an age appropriate book to read and then donated the book to the classroom. The members had one hour to read and then answer ANY question the students had about the book or the volunteers personal/work life.

United Way Holds Successful Saturday of Service

Westmont volunteers help out at Casa Esperanza
SOS Volunteers

On February 27th, 26 volunteers from around Santa Barbara County generously donated their Saturday to participate in a small Day of Caring called United Way's Saturday of Service (SOS).  Originally there were going to be 5 organizations and over 50 volunteers taking part in the event, but due to rainy weather several sites had to be postponed.

However, the rain did not put a damper on Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara or Casa Esperanza volunteer sites.  Eleven volunteers enthusiastically went to work at the Boys & Girls Club, painting a fresh coat on the art room walls.  You could see the excitement on each volunteer's face as they smiled and took pride in giving new life to the room.

Over at Casa Esperanza, the same can be said as 15 volunteers from Westmont College diligently scrubbed, cleaned and served a meal to those in need.  Carl, a frequent recipient of Casa Esperanza's services said of the volunteers, "Their graciousness really made me feel welcome."

United Way would like to thank the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara and Casa Esperanza for participating in the SOS, but most of all we thank the 26 volunteers who demonstrated what community is all about.  Thank you volunteers!

 United Way Participates in Disney's
Give a Day, Get a Day Promotion

Disney

One million volunteers from all over the country were inspired by Disney's Give a Day, Get a Day program which began on January 1, 2010.  The program was created to promote volunteerism and impact communities nationwide by rewarding people with a free ticket to Disneyland theme parks for a day of volunteer service.

Disney reached their limit of one million volunteers in just two months, making this a very successful program.  Agencies such as United Way did a great job of offering opportunities for people who would not normally volunteer.

According to Volunteer Coordinator Kellen Skersies, United Way of Santa Barbara County was a direct beneficiary of Disney Give a Day, Get a Day, utilizing 120 volunteers who signed up through the Disney program.

"The Disney Give a Day, Get a Day program was a great source of help over the past two months for our organization, and it was nice that volunteers were able to be rewarded for their efforts," said Skersies.

The hope of Disney and non-profits around the U.S. is that those who volunteered through this program would remain inspired and continue to devote their time to bettering their communities through volunteering.
