This Hollywood themed event will take place on Wednesday, May 18 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center. We will honor our local volunteers and employers for their dedication to the people in Santa Barbara County. On Wednesday, April 13, Santa Barbara County's United Way delivered its "Jeopardy" style electronic scoring device to the children at La Cumbre Junior High School. The gift was presented to Principal JoAnn Caines, who brought it to Mrs. Hollister's 7th grade pre-algebra class for its first live demonstration, which was a success! The children, who were paired for the game, quickly tried to determine the answers to the mathematical questions. They all had their eyes on the prize of a pass to go to lunch five minutes early. After the first demonstration, Principal Caines said, This is a dream come true! It brings fun competition to the classroom, as shown in the demonstration.
The machine took a few months for United Way volunteer Bob Uradnicek to design, purchase parts, and assemble. Bob is a retired engineer from Delco and General Dynamics Land System-CTC. Thanks to Bob, the device works perfectly! He designed the apparatus to have one master control with eight buzzers for students to press when they know the answer. Students can be placed in teams for more complicated questions, too. This will engage the students, which will result in increased knowledge while making learning a more fun activity.
A huge thank you to our 84 volunteers who donated their time and talent to better our community! Throughout a three month period, the volunteers reviewed applications and program financials, attended site visits, and evaluated program presentations. During the final meeting, the volunteers debated for hours over the funding distribution. The volunteers considered many factors such as the Contributor Survey, program efficiency and effectiveness, and outcomes achieved, along with United Way's Mission, Vision, & Values. All the while, the volunteers knew they were being stewards for the 10,000+ United Way donors. Each panel combined their volunteers’ strengths to ensure that your donation is wisely invested.
To formally thank our volunteers of this process, we invited them to our Volunteer Review Thank You Reception on April 13 at the Chase Palm Park Center. The sun was shining as guests entered the Hawaiian decorated venue. Everyone enjoyed the tropical hors d'oeuvres provided by Two Peas in a Pod. Three people were honored at the event. Heidi Holly and Jerry Horan won for the best Hawaiian outfit, and John Girlando won the random drawing for completing all requested volunteer input and evaluation forms. Also during the program, the volunteer Chairs and Deputy Chairs were given our deepest thanks. They are John Stampe, Doug Allard, John Hanna, Linda Gunther, John Girlando, Lyra Monroe, Robbie Faeh, Marilyn Anticouni, Jerry Horan, Melinda Staveley, Rick Scott, Syd Walker, Bob Shapiro, and Steve McGovern. We also want to thank the Volunteer Review Cabinet of Karen Anne Platt, Tamara Skov, and Dave Lamkin. Thank you to everyone who participated in this process!

With only 1 week to plan their traditional 3 week Campaign, ABC Clio found themselves in a bit of crunch this year. Luckily newly appointed Campaign Manager Kristina Kiefer called together the most impressive team of creative, dedicated and diligent colleagues to pull together another successful Campaign! Team members Kristina Kiefer, Patrick Adams, Cindy Camillucci, Jamie Martin, Bill Pellerin and Chris Bloyer made the Campaign a blast with Power Point Presentations, a Surf Dog Day and Booksale, E-Bay Auction, Radical Raffle and Head Shaving Rally. ABC Clio's Campaign increased by 10% with a gift of $26,050 to our community. This goes to show that the right group of people can create amazing results! Bob Roebuck joined Montecito Water District this past year as the new General Manager and showed an interest in giving back the community. With the help of Evalyn Kerman, they brought their campaign total up over 300%! The employees of the water district are serving the residents of this county in helping make sure we have clean water and in so many other ways as well! Way to go Montecito Water District!
