  Prescription Drug Cards

Distributing the cards: Kent Englert, Board Chair for United Way of Santa Barbara County; LuAnn Miller, Executive Director for Isla Vista Youth Projects; Christina Bath, Program & Evaluation Manager for First 5 Santa Barbara County; Theresa Weissglass, Early Childhood Healthy Start Director for Santa Barbara School District.

United Way of Santa Barbara County received donated prescription drug discount cards from Membership Services Corporation.   These bilingual Spanish/English cards have a retail value of $29.95.  Though it will not solve the problem of the high cost of prescription drugs, these cards will save the cardholders and their families an average of 21% on 9 out of 10 prescriptions.  United Way researched local pharmacies at Longs, Rite Aid, Vons, and Ralph’s, and they all accept this card.  All the contacted pharmacies stated the savings are approximately 20% when a person uses the card.  People simply present their card to their pharmacist who will enter the information into the computer, and the discounted rates will be applied at the checkout register.  Organizations partnering with United Way to distribute more than 8,500 cards include:

Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse

Domestic Violence Solutions

First 5 Santa Barbara County

Girls Incorporated of Carpinteria

Independent Living Resource Center

Isla Vista Youth Projects

"Jeopardy" Devices

Alex Puhl, Teacher Al Soenke, Haroon Azizy, Device Creator Bob Uradnicek, Aaron Berk, and Aasish Jain

United Way of Santa Barbara County is working with students from Dos Pueblos High School to create “Jeopardy” devices for La Cumbre Junior High School' principal, JoAnn Caines. Last year, Principal Caines had the idea for the devices to make learning fun and to bring competition to the classroom.  United Way explained Principal Caines’s idea to United Way volunteer and retired engineer, Bob Uradnicek.   Bob designed and created the apparatus to have one master control with eight buzzers for students to press when they know the answer to a question in the classroom.  Students can be placed in teams for more complicated questions, too.  Principal Caines was thrilled with the final version of the device and its use in the classrooms.  The apparatus became so popular, that Principal Caines requested more of them.

Working on creating devices to use in school classrooms.

United Way then began working with Al Soenke, ROP (Regional Occupational Program) teacher with Dos Pueblos High School.  Al’s students have been volunteering Saturday mornings to create the devices and hope to have them completed in May.  Students Aaron Berk, Sean Batchelder, Haroon Azizy, Tommy Aziz, Assish Jain, Merpour Arash, Alex Puhl, Rudy Saldana, James Danley, and Xuyang Zhang have been learning about electronics and earning community service hours while creating the devices.

United Way would like to thank the students at Dos Pueblos High School for their hard work on this project.  In addition, we would like to thank Al Soenke for providing the instruction and being supportive of this community project.  Lastly, we wish to thank Bob Uradnicek for his design and for continuing to assist with the project.

  Red Feather Ball Past Honorees

Katherine and Stewart at the 2003 Red Feather Ball

Stewart and Katherine Abercrombie were the recipients of the Abercrombie Community Excellence Award at the Red Feather Ball in 2000.   Stewart and Katherine were supporters of many local organizations including United Way, Santa Barbara  Zoological Gardens, Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, the Westmont Foundation, and many others.  Stewart was also a member of Ranchero Vistadores for over 50 years.  He was very involved in Old Spanish Days and was Parade Marshall of Fiesta in 1963.  Katherine was the originator of the Godfathers for Girl’s Inc. and, together with Stewart, launched the first-ever Red Feather Ball in 1997.  Before his passing on March 27 of last year, Stewart and Katherine were the recipients of many local awards, including the one United Way named after them.  Stewart’s optimism, friendship and support are deeply missed by all of us at United Way.

Please join us on Saturday, October 14, 2006 when we celebrate Stewart and Katherine Abercrombie and a decade of honorees at the 10th Annual Red Feather Ball at the Bacara Resort & Spa.
