It's Fun in the Sun Time
It's that time of year again! Summer is just around the corner and plans for United Way of Santa Barbara County's unique, collaborative summer educational program, Fun in the Sun, are well underway! This year we are so excited that Fun in the Sun will be expanding into Carpinteria! This will allow us the opportunity to serve approximately 300 children at four locations.
We are also looking forward to an enhanced partnership with the Santa Barbara School District, which will provide Fun in the Sun with credentialed teachers to lead the increasingly successful summer reading and academic component. A research study conducted by the John Hopkins University Center for Summer Learning discovered that low-income children typically lose 2-3 months in reading achievement over the summer months. At Fun in the Sun we take this very seriously. We are proud to report that a thorough evaluation of our program conducted by a Claremont Graduate University researcher last summer found that 76% of Fun in the Sun participants showed substantial gains in reading achievement and reading enjoyment! This year, we are looking forward to even greater improvements in the children's academic achievement levels.
Dates are filling up quickly for Lunch Bunch, the lunch hour mentoring program at Fun in the Sun. If you'd like to put together a Lunch Bunch team and come out and join us to make a difference in the lives of these children this summer, please contact our Fun in the Sun Coordinator, Maggie Walsh, at mwalsh@unitedwaysb.org. |
The Power of Born Learning
We know what happens in a child's early years matters - for success in life and for school readiness. Yet many parents and caregivers don't know exactly what actions to take to prepare young children for school, or feel like they don't have time to do what's needed. United Way, the Ad Council and Civitas have formed an unprecedented partnership around Born Learning. This partnership brings together a nationwide community impact network with the nation's preeminent public service advertiser and a top expert in parent outreach strategies and creative marketing around early childhood. Through advertising, parent education and community impact, Born Learning will help parents and caregivers take action to provide quality early learning opportunities for young children. The reality is that children are learning constantly, right from birth. What they learn during those first five years depends on the experiences they have each and every day. This is our greatest challenge and our greatest opportunity. Born Learning is built on three cornerstones: awareness, education, and action. It is necessary for parents and caregivers to realize the opportunities available each day to teach their children valuable lessons, without having to change their routine. Born Learning takes early learning research and translates it into activities and educational tools for parents and caregivers. The educational materials for Born Learning are user-friendly and designed to help parents and caregivers understand how to prepare their children for school.
