Character Counts for a Goleta Valley Jr. High Student
It's hard to believe that Janine Wilson is only in eighth grade. With her extensive list of academic and extra-curricular achievements, she exemplifies what it means to "go above and beyond".
On May 22, 2008, United Way of Santa Barbara County presented an Outstanding Character Award to Janine, a Goleta Valley Junior High School student. This award recognizes Jr. High youth that consistently demonstrate outstanding character in and out of the school setting. Janine exemplified trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship (the six character pillars outlined in United Way's children's program Character Counts!) through both school and community involvement.
A few of her recent accomplishments include winning a bronze award in the Santa Barbara County Science Fair for Goleta Valley, achieving a 4.0 GPA, membership in the National Junior Honor's Society, elligibility for the President's Award, and taking a jewelry making hobby and turning it into a profit-generating business endeavor with proceeds donated to Cottage Hospital's Neonatal Unit.
Congratulations Janine! United Way is looking forward to hearing about more of your achievements next year as you enter Dos Pueblos High School.

Exxon Mobil Golf Tournament
Once again this year, Exxon Mobil is holding two golf tournaments to benefit local United Ways. The first of these two tournaments took place on Friday, May 9th at the River Course at Alisal in Solvang. More than 40 Exxon employees took part in the event and raised more than $2,000!
Each year Exxon Mobil employees engage in several special events to raise additional money to increase their employee campaign total. Last year these events included two golf tournaments, a silent auction, and a bake sale. United Way thanks Jay McCord, 2008 Employee Campaign Manager, for organizing the event and all of the Exxon employees who participated!

Alexis de Tocqueville Thank You Reception
More than 80 of United Way's most generous donors were warmly feted at the 15th Annual Thank You Reception for members of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society (ADT) and Leadership Circle on April 16, 2008 at the Birnam Wood Golf Club. In welcoming the group, Leadership Circle Co-Chair David Prichard thanked everyone for their outstanding support of United Way's goal to ensure that every child, senior and their families in South Santa Barbara County has an opportunity for a secure and productive future. He especially acknowledged his wife, Cris, as his Co-Chair, and the committee members who helped to achieve last year's outstanding results. Jim Wolfe, Alexis de Tocqueville Society Chair, thanked his Co-Chair and wife, Marcia, for her leadership, and acknowledged all ADT members in attendance for their exemplary support of United Way with annual gifts of $10,000 and more. Tom and Barbara Brashears were pleasantly surprised to receive special tokens of recognition from Jim on behalf of ADT. Jim also announced that at the Annual Awards Celebration in May, they would receive the Alexis de Tocqueville Award for Outstanding Philanthropy.
Kudos and gratitude were expressed for Bob and Val Montgomery, who were unable to attend the evening's event. Jim acknowledged their wonderful contributions to the Red Feather Ball 2007 and revealed that the Montgomerys will also be honored at the Annual Awards Celebration in May as Outstanding Volunteers of Time, Talent & Treasure in Leadership Giving. United Way's Paul Didier and Charles Caldwell provided a tantalizing sneak preview of the exciting, new Power of Partnership Initiative (POPI) that is being launched this month. The Initiative is actively engaging top leaders from all sectors of South Santa Barbara County in a precedent-setting collaboration that will significantly improve the future of our community's children and the lives of our seniors. Everyone in attendance left the event excited by this vision and by the landmark leadership role of United Way in making it happen.

Smart Spending for Your Stimulus Check
Economic stimulus checks began hitting bank accounts this month and many families are deciding how to best use the added bump to their incomes. United Way has come up with 10 options for spending your rebate check.
The options that follow could help you and your family move closer to financial independence by getting rid of debt, paying for an education or meeting vital basic needs.
1. Pay down debt. Debt is one of the biggest obstacles to financial independence. Give serious consideration to paying down credit card or student loan debt. Americans have doubled their debt over the past decade to $2.5 trillion (this excludes mortgage-related debt). The sooner you eradicate your debt, the sooner you can build assets, which will put you on the road to financial stability. 2. Apply toward mortgage principal. Consider making an extra payment to your principal. Although the short-term benefit may seem small the impact over 30 years could result in noticeable mortgage interest savings. 3. Avoid fees and get your whole check. If you don't have a bank account, avoid cashing your rebate check at check cashing outlets that aren't affiliated with a financial institution because they will charge high fees that eat into your rebate. Wal-Mart is offering the opportunity to cash your check for free at their stores and no purchase is necessary. Once you do this, you should also consider our next option... 4. Get banked. More than 28 million Americans do not have a bank account and an additional 44.7 million are under-banked, hindering them from becoming financially stable. If you are one of millions without a bank account, consider starting a savings account with your rebate. If you have a bank account, consider directing some or all of your rebate toward beefing up your rainy day fund. 5. Start (or add to) your child's college fund. Individuals who are college educated are likely to make $1 million more in their lifetime than those with only a high school diploma. Help your child attain a full education and be better prepared to succeed in life. 6. Build you retirement nest egg. If you plan to stop working at some point you need to put money away. The money you invest in your retirement today is going to carry you even further down the road when the interest in your investment grows. Consider a Roth IRA or other investment vehicle. 7. Further your education. Have you been thinking about finishing a degree or receiving training in a different career field? Use your rebate toward that goal and in turn you can increase your employability. 8. Support others in need. If you have all you need, consider helping others thrive by donating some of your rebate to United Way of Santa Barbara County
9. Update your home. A home is a person's greatest financial asset, so it's important to keep it in good condition. Many home improvement stores are offering discounts if you use your rebate check toward merchandise.
Take advantage of retail savings. Once you have carefully covered all of your savings, investing and charitable giving bases consider taking advantage of discounts retailers are currently offering to consumers in hopes of getting some of their stimulus cash. National and local retailers are offering discounts, gift cards and other incentives to get you to shop. Now may not be a bad time to take advantage of the extra buying power to get clothes for the children or an item you really need.
