United Way of Santa Barbara is partnering with the
federally-funded, local Area Agency on Aging (AAA) to provide a joint funding stream for
respite services to help Family Caregivers who take care of dependent
seniors. Area Agencies on Aging are the local level of a national
network of federal agencies working on behalf of senior citizens and
funding senior programs.
As
the senior population grows and our senior care infrastructure remains costly
and at a stand still in capacity, more and more seniors will be taken care of by
a family member – most often an elderly spouse or one of their children. Many of
these caregivers rarely get to take a “respite” from attending to their loved
one, even for essential needs like their own health. Over the next ten years,
senior care experts predict this to be an ever escalating problem in our
community and around the nation.
