The Territory Ahead Donates More than $400,000 Worth
of New Clothing to United Way of Santa Barbara County
On May 29th, 2007, The Territory Ahead, a clothing company based
in Santa Barbara, donated brand new clothes to four different United Way
organizations based in San Jose, Oakland, Santa Barbara, and Cincinnati,
Ohio. The clothing donation is valued at $400,000 and will provide
13,428 units of clothing (pants, shirts, and jackets). The Territory
Ahead, a long time supporter of United Way, decided to provide the
clothing for poverty level citizens where the company operates rather
than sell the product to another retailer for profit. The value of the
units to be distributed in Santa Barbara County is approximately
$195,000.
One multi-agency program benefiting from the donation is United Way of
Santa Barbara County’s Fun in the Sun, a summer enrichment
program for poverty-level children in South Santa Barbara County. Six
hundred parents of Fun in the Sun children will receive free clothing
thanks to the generous donation. Another United Way partnership, the
Pre-Kindergarten Summer Institutes, will distribute the clothing to
families who have difficulty meeting basic needs. LuAnn Miller,
Executive Director of Isla Vista Youth Projects, and Theresa
Weissglass, Executive Director of Healthy Start and A-OK
Programs, will take the lead in identifying families in need and
matching those families with free clothing.
The large-scale clothing donation by The Territory Ahead amplifies the
effect that local services have on the poverty population by addressing
basic needs like clothing along with long-term concerns like child
education and drug rehabilitation. Paul Didier, President and CEO
of United Way of Santa Barbara County, stated, “We are proud to help The
Territory Ahead distribute these needed clothes to families that can use
them. The Power of Partnership™
—connecting the best resources of our
community—allows us to impact people in the most effective way.”
