United Way Distributes Prescription Drug Discount Cards to Local Pharmacies, Those in Need-United Way of Santa Barbara County to provide aid to those who cannot afford prescription drugs or do not have coverage

Santa Barbara, CA, Jan. 27, 2009 – In this current economic climate, many individuals in Santa Barbara County don't have health insurance, or need medicine not covered by their insurance plan. Medications often are not top priority when money is tight. Nationally, one out of every five people does not have prescription drug coverage. These people can now save money on their prescription medications with United Way’s “FamilyWize” prescription drug discount card. This card can lower the cost of medicine by an average 20% to 30%. United Way of Santa Barbara County is providing these cards free-of-charge throughout South County. The cards are available at local participating pharmacies, partner organizations, United Way of Santa Barbara County and United Way of North Santa Barbara County offices. Individuals with Internet access can go to www.unitedwaysb.org to print a card, look up drug prices, and get a list of participating pharmacies. Individuals can also call the United Way of Santa Barbara County with questions at 805-965-8591.

"Healthcare costs are one of the top concerns for people around the country and in our own community," said Paul Didier, Executive Director of United Way of Santa Barbara County. "Because of the high costs of prescription medicines, and the wide gaps in insurance, a staggering 40% of adults are not getting the medicines they need.”

“We are pleased to be partnering with FamilyWize and local pharmacies in bringing this important benefit to the Santa Barbara area,” continued Didier. “The prescription drug discount cards will help individuals and families who otherwise could not afford to buy the medicine they need."

United Way’s FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Card enables clients to receive discounted pricing on prescription drugs. The cards can be used for any prescription not covered by insurance. There is no fee for the card and no age or other eligibility requirements, waiting periods, enrollment or paperwork. To use the cards, clients simply present their card with each prescription from their doctor to the participating pharmacy at the time of purchase to receive the discounts. No personal information will be collected or shared and the card can be used often as needed.

Santa Barbara County residents have saved around $445,000 since United Way of Santa Barbara County began distributing the cards one year ago, with an average savings per visit of $20.
