Through more than 25 years of extensive
research, the Search Institute of Minnesota has identified 40
Developmental Assets that have been proven to contribute to the healthy
development of young people. These Developmental Assets are concrete,
positive experiences and personal qualities that youth need to grow up
strong, caring, and responsible. Research reveals that the greater
number of Developmental Assets experiences by young people the more
positive and successful their development.
The Red Binder Project is a simple, asset building activity which
increases the number of assets a youth possesses and promotes positive
relationships between teachers and students. It provides the opportunity
to develop a youth-adult partnership based on interests that are
non-academic. Individual, uninterrupted attention during scheduled time
is given to students who are then encouraged to share their interests
and aspirations.
Purposeful and intentional asset-building can occur easily on a school
campus. Very little time is required for this type of asset building and
is likely to result in youth that exhibit successful outcomes related to
leadership, good health, valuing diversity, and academic achievement.
