On Saturday, September 15, 2007 United Way of Santa Barbara County kicked off its Community Campaign to raise pledges to support a local network of health, human, and community building services at the 16th Annual Day of Caring. Volunteers helped local non-profit agencies with "hands-on" work assignments from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A breakfast, which was generously donated by Albertson's, at 8:00 a.m. at the Page Youth Center in Goleta kicked off the annual event.  Volunteers proceeded from the breakfast to community service assignments such as landscape work and plantings, painting, habitat restoration, office work and more in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Santa Ynez. Over 1,200 volunteers participated, including young people from local schools, families, church, and community service groups.

Other major sponsors for Day of Caring included Cox Communications and Santa Barbara Bank and Trust. Thank you to all of the volunteers who came out and donated their time, we could not have done it without you!

Donates School Supplies to Students for New Academic Year

Thanks to the generosity of Lockheed Martin employees in Goleta, at least 100 school-age children attending the afterschool program at Isla Vista Youth Projects will start the new academic year with a brand new set of school supplies!  In collaboration with United Way of Santa Barbara County, Lockheed Martin employees conducted a school supply drive at their workplace during the month of August.  They collected a wide range of donations including notebooks, backpacks, pencils, crayons, and folders to support the students at Isla Vista Youth Projects.

LuAnn Miller, Executive Director of Isla Vista Youth Projects, was on hand to receive the donated supplies.  LuAnn and her staff were deeply appreciative of the efforts of Lockheed Martin employees and were thrilled to be able to provide students with a vast array of supplies that will enhance their learning.

Special thanks to Sarah Kaehn at Lockheed Martin for helping to coordinate the school supply drive with employees.  This effort represents the best that our community has to offer!

Wonderful volunteer Co-Chairs Bob and Val Montgomery are leading the 2007 Red Feather Ball to outstanding results to date.  The Montgomery home will be the site of this year's VIP Reception for the 2007 Abercrombie Awards for Community Excellence.  This years honorees are Bob & Chris Emmons and Damitz, Brooks, Nightingale, Turner & Morrisset (DBNTM).  This event is attended by all past Honorees and United Way's Alexis de Tocqueville Society and Leadership Gold Level members.  One of the evenings highlights will be the presentation of a commemorative to Katherine Abercrombie, who has been voted as the Honorary Chair of the Red Feather Ball in perpetuity by United Way's Board of Directors.

The 2007 Red Feather Ball Women's Committee, led by Val Montgomery, has been busy this summer making this the best ever Red Feather Ball.  The ladies have met twice and are out garnering donations for the Live and Silent Auctions.  They have put a terrific Live Auction together you can review below.  This outstanding group of women are now busy wrapping up the Silent Auction solicitations and building the Invitation List.

Attendance is not required to bid on the following items; however, we encourage you to come and celebrate with us as we honor the Emmons and the DBNTM firm on October 13, 2007 at the Red Feather Club, Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort at 6:00pm.

Amanda* is a single parent living in the Santa Barbara community. She works full-time and has two school-age children. She was referred to a United Way of Santa Barbara County funded agency where the Power of Partnership began helping in Amanda's life. Amanda met weekly with a counselor to set goals, access services, and evaluate progress. She was able to resolve legal issues such as visitation and child support. Through this United Way funded agency, Amanda was able to sign her children up for an after school day care program where they receive supervision and help with homework. She was also able to enroll herself in english classes. Through the Power of Partnership, Amanda's life has calmed down and her daughters are doing better in school, living happy, healthy lives.
