United Way Thanks Executive Club Members
United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC) hosted its 7th annual Executive Club Luncheon Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at Montecito's Four Seasons Biltmore.
UWSBC Board President Tom Thomas of Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, opened the event by sharing the "new" United Way. Through the Power of Partnership™ United Way is developing common goals, strategies, measurements, and a shared language in our community to achieve a greater integration of service efforts and enhance our ability to increase the overall well-being of our children, families, and seniors. Brian Sarvis, Superintendent of Santa Barbara City School District and UWSBC's 2007-2008 Community Campaign Chair, gave an update on the Community Campaign.
The keynote speaker for the luncheon, Westmont College Professor Dr. David Newton, gave an informative talk about "Truth on Terror." He traced the beginning of Islam through the ottoman empire, WWI and WWII Muslim alliances with Germany, as well as the origins of radical Islamic fundamentalism (RIF) and strategic trends through the 1980's and 1990's. Dr. Newton also chronicled the sequence of terror attacks on the west and the US, and the inadequacy of the United Nations to address RIF and the Saddam regime sanction era and the key issues regarding weapons of mass destruction pre- and post-9/11.
UWSBC would like to extend a special thanks to all Executive Club members for the generous work they do for UWSBC and the Santa Barbara community. We were glad to be able to honor their participation with such a luncheon.
For more information on UWSBC's Executive Club, please contact Steve Ortiz, Director of Workplace Development 805/965-8591 ext. 111 or sortiz@unitedwaysb.org. | |
The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara Catches Attention of Employees for United Way
We all know how long mandatory staff meetings can be. Well Rick Scott, CEO from The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara knows how to keep those dreaded meetings fun. He threw out frisbees and stress balls to the group. It made them pay a little more attention in case they needed to dodge flying objects in the air. We had 100% attention. Rick spoke for a few minutes why he supports United Way of Santa Barbara County.
The United Way representative gave a brief overview and updates on Fun in the Sun and 211. The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara is one of our partners with Fun in the Sun. They have teamed up with United Way and other organizations to provide the children hats to wear in the sun and ways to teach them about skin cancer prevention.
They had raffle prizes that were a great incentive for them to pledge at the presentation. We would like to thank them for all their support and belief in our programs. They provided free lunch for everyone who turned in their pledge forms by August 28th. If they get 100% participation, Rick Scott, has agreed to wash everyone's car. It sounds like he will be washing cars for days! At least we know where to find him!

Bartlett Pringle and Wolfe LLP Take New Approach to Campaign with Jeopardy
Jeopardy device proves that adults can have fun! United Way of Santa Barbara County and Bartlett Pringle and Wolfe, LLP thought they would take a new approach to presentations. Late afternoon is usually the hardest time to keep your eyes from shutting, so we decided to let the good times roll. They had an ice cream social and a game of Jeopardy. The game consisted of questions on Fun in the Sun, United Way facts and Santa Barbara history. This was the true test to see who has paid attention through the years about our programs, and they passed the test. They did a fantastic job!
They also blew up over 80 balloons for a balloon pop with a ton of fun prizes, and of course they took advantage of jeans day. When they meet their goal, all the partners will join in on a Karaoke standoff to see who will be the next American Idol! Thank you to the employees at Bartlett Pringle and Wolfe for your continued support. |
