Community West Bank United Way Campaign a Success!

Jessica Arroyo, Fun in the Sun attendee and guest speaker
Once again this year Community West Bank has run a strong Pacesetter campaign, raising more than $16,500! Pacesetter campaigns are those that run before the annual Day of Caring, which was held Saturday, September 19th. These companies get our community campaign off to a strong start each year. This year Community West Bank raffled off vacation days to anybody who attended a campaign presentation and/or returned their pledge form to the campaign committee. They also held a silent auction for themed gift baskets which were generously donated by departments within the bank. Presentations were held at each location in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. The corporate office in Goleta had a very special guest speaker. Jessica Arroyo, who attended United Way's Fun in the Sun program as a child, told the group about her positive experiences with the program. She said she would not be the person she is today had she not participated. United Way would like to thank Jessica Arroyo, Community West Bank's campaign committee, President & CEO Lynda Nahra, Employee Campaign Manager Beth Chi, Chris Carney, and Sharon Brown, and the entire Community West staff for the roles they played in this year's successful campaign.

Results Prove 2009 Fun in the Sun a Huge Success!

Fun in the Sun (FITS) 2009 concluded on Friday, August 7, after an incredible duration of seven weeks. The program served 364 poverty-level children at four sites in Santa Barbara County. Each day consisted of an intensive reading curriculum in the morning, followed by an afternoon of fun and educational enrichment activities.
Every summer, an independent evaluator from PRES Associates provides pre and post testing to participants to determine how effective the program was in accomplishing its goals. Specifically, participants are evaluated for maintenance or improvements in reading skills, attitudes towards reading, positive identity, self-control, perceptions of family and community support.
Preliminary results indicate that FITS participants achieved and surpassed all of the goals in these areas. Throughout the summer, participants made the greatest gains in reading comprehension, showing an improvement of 12 percentiles from pre to post testing. In all, 66% of FITS participants made significant gains in reading comprehension this past summer, enabling them to return to school ready to learn.
The Final Report will be available in the coming weeks, and United Way of Santa Barbara County will be thrilled to share the results with the community.

Health Coverage of 700,000 Children Saved

On Tuesday, September 22nd, Governor Schwarzenegger signed legislation (AB1422) that prevents nearly 700,000 children from losing their Healthy Families health insurance coverage this year. By leveraging federal funds, passage of AB1422 is a bi-partisan win for California kids and tax payers.
The funds raised by the bill, along with an $81 million contribution from the California First 5 Commission, fill the $194 million budget gap for the program and unfreeze enrollment for the nearly 70,000 new children who have been on a waitlist since July.
United Way of Santa Barbara County advocated alongside other California United Ways throughout the state to restore funding for the widely popular program. The projected number of children to be covered by Healthy Families in Santa Barbara County in 2009-10 is 11,200. Read more here.
