United Way of Santa
Barbara County is rolling out its new Web site in September with a brand new look
and useful new features.
This is considered Version 1.0. Activities will be underway in October on features for Version 2.0 and 3.0. Your feedback and involvement will play an increasingly important role in shaping our Web site. Features such as a new E-quiz will allow Santa Barbara County residents to test their community knowledge by asking questions such as—what is the individual median annual retirement income in Santa Barbara County? Other features include a Campaign Toolkit for Workplace Campaigns—everything you need to run a successful campaign, volunteer & donate online, and much more! So, check us out—Coming in September to a United Way Web site near you at www.unitedwaysb.org.
Teachers are an enormous part of a student’s life, and being able to reach the resources students need is of growing importance to teachers. This directory makes these resources one-click away. Check out the site at www.211sbcounty.org/teachers. We still consider this our Version 1.0-- if you have any suggestions on how to make this resource even better, we would like to hear from you! Let us know by emailing brandondotts@fsacares.org.
With the buzz of back-to-school near, and another year of Fun in the Sun under their belts, Girls Inc. and United Way of Santa Barbara County came together on Wednesday, August 9 for the End of Summer Celebration. A little food, a little mingling and a lot of thank-yous went around the Girls Inc. facility that evening, where counselors, volunteers and coordinators were appreciated for their hard work and effort. Important thanks went out to counselors, who are an integral part of Fun in the Sun, which allows the children to grow and learn in ways that they have never experienced. Volunteers recognized included Patty Forster, Helen Goode and Joy Winer, who helped Fun in the Sun children excel in the “Ready 2 Read” program—a program that promotes reading and comprehension skills throughout the summer months. Ready 2 Read is such an important part of the Fun in the Sun program because so many students, especially low-income and homeless kids, lose valuable reading skills in the summer months, when these skills are rarely practiced. Other staff and coordinators from United Way, including Kathleen Maloney, Amie Tat and Marisol Naranjo, were recognized for their important role in coordinating volunteers, Fun in the Sun sites and events. After another amazing group of kids and a stellar staff, Girls Inc. and the United Way are already gearing up to make next year’s program even better!
Just within the last two years, IVYP relocated to a new facility for its Isla Vista Children’s Center said LuAnn Miller, IVYP Executive Director. “We had been at our previous site in IV for over 30 years,” Miller said. “United Way has been so helpful and so supportive in helping us grow and expand.” Furthering their expansion even more, IVYP will open its Family Resource Center, adjacent to Isla Vista School on the UCSB West campus, by mid-September. The Center will also house IVYP’s School Readiness Program and its State Preschool. The Family Resource Center is a community-based setting for families to access the resources and support they need—such as resource and referral, parent education classes, translation assistance and individual counseling, to name a few. IVYP’s most recent expansions are just the beginning—with the help of the community and other organizations like the United Way, IVYP will continue its mission throughout the IV Community. “The Youth Projects evolves programming in response to community need” Miller said. “We hear the needs, secure funding and provide new programming to the community. That is community-based programming at its best, and the United Way has been such a partner for us as we start new programs.”
