Benefits of Membership
In the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of Santa Barbara County
The Alexis de Tocqueville Society recognizes individuals who contribute $10,000 to
$1 million and beyond.
 |
| Anne Smith Towbes &
Michael Towbes |
The name of the Society was chosen because of Alexis de Tocqueville’s admiration
for the American spirit of voluntary association and voluntary effort
for the community good, which he wrote about during a trip to the new
United States in the early 1800’s. The Society was funded more than
thirty years ago jointly by United Way of America (our national trade
association) and the Alexis de Tocqueville family in France to recognize
outstanding philanthropists across the United States
Many opportunities are open to
you as you recognize community needs and consider your charitable
intentions. As your annual charitable giving level approaches the
$10,000 level, membership in the Alexis de Tocqueville Society offers you the
options and flexibility you need to expand your philanthropic influence
in our community.
- The convenience of writing
one check, making payments or payroll deductions to United Way to cover
all your annual charitable giving. You may restrict your gift
to any qualified charitable organization, along with your gift to United Way.
-
Provide direct advice and council to United Way
board and commission to help design and deliver innovative solutions to
meet community goals. A variety
of paper and electronic surveys along with face to face meetings are
scheduled at various times of the year.
- The flexibility of
establishing a Personal Giving Account. If you choose, you
may make one contribution to establish the account. As opportunities
arise throughout the year, you have the flexibility to contribute to any
charitable organization by simply calling United Way.
- The opportunity to set an
example for national and local philanthropic leadership. You have
the option of listing your name with many other philanthropists
nationwide in the national Tocqueville Society Leadership Book and also
in local publications.
- The ability to contribute
to organizations anonymously through United Way. All checks will be
issued from United Way with a cover letter stating that you, the donor,
wish to remain anonymous.
- The opportunity to gather with other like-minded individuals from Santa Barbara County and across the
nation for social events and informational seminars. You will
be invited annually to a number of local events, including the Annual
Award celebration, the Red Feather Ball VIP Reception, and other annual
national events. Special opportunities are made available to meet with other national
Alexis de Tocqueville members such as Bill and Melinda Gates, and many of the other 10,000
members across the country, at unique resort settings.
- The power to produce local
community solutions that meet existing and emerging Santa Barbara
County needs. Your gift to United Way of Santa Barbara County is changing
lives with measurable and verifiable results through the Power of
Partnership™.

Alexis de Tocqueville Society/Leadership Yearly Events:
|
The Heritage Club was founded in 1982 to honor
those forward-thinking individuals who have shown their long-term commitment
to the community by leaving their legacy to United Way Santa Barbara County.
These philanthropic friends share an important vision – their commitment to
the wellbeing of this community and the people who live here. They also
share a profound understanding of the powerful impact such a commitment has
on our community, not only today, but for generations to come.
 |
| Heritage Club members Merrilyn &
Earl Damitz |
Their gifts come in the
form of Charitable Remainder Trusts, Gift Annuities, Pooled
Income Funds, Philanthropic Funds, Life Insurance and
Bequests. Through these thoughtful estate plans, their endowment
provides a solid foundation of perpetual support for United Way of Santa
Barbara County and the human services needs of our community.
That is why the Heritage
Club recognizes those who make planned gifts on the Wall of Honor, which is
a permanent plaque located in the Stuart Taylor Main Conference Room, and in
the Annual Thank You Report. Each year United Way honors our Heritage Club
members at the Annual Heritage Club Appreciation Luncheon, which is hosted
by one of Santa Barbara’s exclusive restaurants and sponsored by a local
business. Of course, those who prefer anonymity in their philanthropy are
completely respected with strict confidentiality, and are listed as
Anonymous Donors in all our materials.
As you may know, the
nation’s tax laws provide incentives that encourage philanthropy, because of
the unique role that charitable organizations play in meeting the important
needs of society. There are many benefits that charitable financial
planning can offer in structuring a gift.
