Young Leaders Society

• Target Audience
  Community oriented individuals or couples 40 years of age or younger, contributing a combined annual gift of $300 or more to United Way of Santa Barbara County, may become members of the Young Leaders Society.
   
• Why Join?
  The Young Leaders Society was formed to provide community involvement and personal development opportunities to its young members. This is a new, unique and dynamic group that offers its members multiple avenues to become involved with various United Way Initiatives, to directly make a difference in people’s lives, and to ultimately become leaders in our community.
   
• Benefits
  Members will enjoy many exclusive opportunities throughout the year. Activities will include volunteer projects, mentoring programs, networking and business opportunities, and other fun events. YLS programs will give members the opportunity to meet other like-minded civic and business leaders and become acquainted with Santa Barbara’s prominent philanthropists.
   
• What’s Required of Members?
  The great news is that once qualified to join, members do not have any expected requirements. This program was designed to offer something different for all its members, regardless of level of involvement or area of interest. These are busy times; therefore members should choose what activities are important to them. You can sign up for multiple service projects, network at YLS business functions, or simply be recognized as a Young Leader.

	What: Helping at CAC's Backdoor Deli Date: Saturday, January 30, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Location: CAC's Backdoor Deli Partner: United Way of Santa Barbara County Goal: Prepping, moving, painting and cleaning CAC's Backdoor Deli. The proceeds from the Backdoor Deli help support the Senior Nutrition program throughout Santa Barbara County, notably Meals on Wheels. CAC provided services to approximately 13,000 low-income individuals and families in 2009.
	What: Fun in the Sun—Lunch Bunch Date: June 22-August 7, 11:45 am—1:00 pm Location: 4 elementary school sites in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara & Goleta Partner: United Way of Santa Barbara County Goal: To mentor at-risk and under-privileged youth during the Fun in the Sun summer enrichment program.
	What: Day of the Child/Day of the Book Date: Saturday, April 25, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm Location: Santa Barbara Central Library, 40 E. Anapamu Partner: Santa Barbara Public Library System Goal: To honor children, languages and cultures, to encourage reading and literacy, and to promote library collections.
	What: Organic Garden Project at Franklin School Date: Saturday, March 21, 2009 — 8:30 am to 12:00 pm Location: Franklin School, 1111 Mason St. Partner: Santa Barbara Diabetes Resource Center Goal: Franklin School has the highest obesity rate in the County. Implementing the organic garden program increases children’s interest in healthier eating and reduces obesity.

Upcoming Events Our upcoming Professional Development event, "Entering a Green Economy," will feature Alan Tratner, Inventor, Environmental Expert and Entrepreneur. More details to follow. Since YLS launched in March 2009, the amount of members has more than doubled to almost 40 members. The group will be celebrating its first year of　accomplishments with a One Year Anniversary Celebration in April. More details to follow.

Young Leaders Society Brings Holiday Cheer to Local People in Need

　

Nadine Torbey, Amber Ortiz, Asura Serra, Janine Buseman-Williams, Oscar Flores and Lee Foster bring holiday cheer to hospice patients

United Way's Young Leaders Society has provided hours of volunteer support to children, families and most recently seniors. On December 19, 2009, nine volunteers brought gift bags and holiday cheer to the patients of Sarah House and Serenity House. The patients and their families were very touched to receive special attention during the holiday season. YLS members donated the funds to supply the gift bags containing holiday decorations, warm socks, cookies and crossword puzzles.

Young Leaders Create "Authentic Connections";

More than 60 young leaders filled Union Ale Brewing Company for a thought-provoking evening. The presentation "Authentic Connections, Networking Today" encouraged attendees to create deeper relationships by looking within, being agenda-less, and sharing optimism. The presentation and probing discussion was lead by Liza Taylor, MSOD, who created the Authentic Connection model in 2004.

Liza, an alumni from UCSB, currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Her goal is to have individuals really think about who they are and what they want in order to achieve their business and professional goals in a deeper, more honest way.

On another note, last month YLS member Jennifer Parkes was honored with Young Leader of the Year at Pacific Coast Business Times "40 Under 40" Dinner. Jennifer  is a land technician in the exploration department at Venoco, Inc. in Carpinteria. She is a second year member of the Venoco Community Partnership Committee, which is responsible for researching non-profit grant requests, making site visits, and advocating for nonprofit interests. Jennifer is also an annual volunteer for United Way's Fun in the Sun Summer Enrichment Program and Day of Caring, the largest single-day volunteer event in the tri-counties. She is an active member and volunteer with the Young Leaders Society of Santa Barbara County, Partners in Education Volunteer Program, and Fighting Back Mentor Program.

Franklin Templeton and Edward Jones Host "Psychology of Investing" Seminar for Young Leaders Society

More than 40 young professionals attended the second in a series of professional development events hosted by United Way's Young Leaders Society. The guest speaker, Jeff Vollmer of Franklin Templeton, presented "Psychology of Investing - Emotions, Expectations and Economics". The seminar presented a down-to-earth approach to investing and the importance of saving while young. The event was held at the Harbor Restaurant on Tuesday, August 11th, and was sponsored by Franklin Templeton and Edward Jones.

Upcoming events for Young Leaders Society include volunteering at Day of Caring; partnering with the Santa Barbara Public Library for a book delivery program titled "Reading Is Fundamental"; and a networking and wine tasting event in the Fall.

Day of The Child/Day of the Book

YLS collaborated with First 5 and the Junior League to celebrate Day of the Child. Day of the Child emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Its goals are to celebrate children, reading, and to promote the Santa Barbara Public Library. The YLS team hosted a “booth” from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm, where children used their creativity to make and write their own books and bookmarks. The event was at full capacity at noon with over 400 children and parents!
