County of Santa Barbara Rental Assistance - Student Eligibility

There are strict eligibility requirements for this funding opportunity. Please be sure to read this in its entirety, before applying through the link at the bottom of this page. 

If you are a student attending an institution of higher education (e.g. college or university), ADDITIONAL requirements apply to you.

If you are NOT a student, please follow the link, Non-Student Resident Eligibility Requirements.

Students enrolled in higher education are not eligible for funding, UNLESS they also meet one of the below requirements:
Are age 24 or older, or
Are married, or
Have a dependent child, or
Are a veteran of the U.S. military, or
Are a person with a disability
* Note: dependent students age 18-23 may qualify only if their parents' household income qualifies. In that case, income documentation for BOTH the student AND the student's parent(s) will be required and totaled in order to determine household income and eligibility. 

If you or anyone in your lease/rental agreement are claimed as dependents or could be claimed as a dependent, you will have to provide asset and financial information for your parent/guardian.

If you are not a dependent student, you must also meet ALL of the following requirements to be eligible to apply:

1. You must currently reside in a rental unit within one of the following eligible areas
The incorporated city limits of Buellton, Carpinteria, Guadalupe, or Solvang
Any unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County (e.g. Burton Mesa, Casmalia, Cuyama, Eastern Goleta Valley, Gaviota, Isla Vista, Los Alamos, Los Olivos, Montecito, Orcutt, Santa Ynez, Summerland, Vandenberg Village, etc.)

2. You must have experienced a loss of income related to COVID-19.

3. You must have no other resources to pay your rent.

4. Your household must qualify as a low-income household based on your current household income. All adult members of the household age 18 and older must qualify regardless of whether related. Your household income must be at or below the following amount based on household size: 

  • 1 individual - $66,750
  • 2 individuals - $76,250
  • 3 individuals - $85,800
  • 4 individuals - $95,300
  • 5 individuals - $102,950
  • 6 individuals - $110,550
  • 7 individuals - $118,200
  • 8 individuals - $125,800 

5. You must currently occupy and plan to remain in your current unit. (This assistance is for the purpose of helping residents stay in their current housing. Assistance may not be applied to moving expenses, utilities, security deposits, etc.)

6. You must NOT be receiving a rent subsidy via Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher, Project Based Subsidy or other permanent rent subsidy. (If you are, you should contact the issuer of the subsidy for a possible rent adjustment.)
