Every year United Way's Young Leaders Society (YLS) hosts the United We Read local volunteer opportunity.
This event celebrates Read Across America Day by inviting local volunteers to visit a local school and read their favorite childhood book to a classroom. The goal is for volunteers to share the love of reading with students, and also tell the students a little bit about themselves and how reading has impacted their lives. All volunteers are encouraged to purchase an age-appropriate book to read and donate to the school they visit, or they can grab a book from the school library to read to the students. Typically, volunteers read to Kindergarten through 6th grade classrooms of 20-25 students. YLS also donates proceeds from our United We Bowl event to the schools to purchase books for their school library. Click here to see pictures from our 2020 event.
2022 United We Read Book Drive
We are honored to announce a successful 2022 United We Read Book Drive! The students, librarians, and principals of Franklin Elementary, Canalino Elementary, McKinley Elementary, and La Colina Junior High were each so excited and moved by the support of our community to help them as they replenish their libraries and build their collection of Spanish-written books. We were able to raise over $3,000 and donated over 90 books to our local schools.
