Every year United Way's Young Leaders Society (YLS) hosts the "United We Read" local volunteer opportunity.
This event celebrates Read Across America Day by inviting local volunteers to visit a local school and read their favorite childhood book to a classroom. The goal is for volunteers to share the love of reading with students, and also tell the students a little bit about themselves and how reading has impacted their lives. All volunteers are encouraged to purchase an age-appropriate book to read and donate to the school they visit, or they can grab a book from the school library to read to the students. Typically, volunteers read to Kindergarten through 6th grade classrooms of 20-25 students. In addition to allowing volunteers to read to a classroom, "United We Read" also gives YLS the opportunity to donate money to these schools to purchase books for their school library. The money donated comes from the proceeds of YLS's Fall event, United We Bowl. Click here to see pictures from our 2020 event!
