This year I am proud to be United Way's Campaign Cabinet Chair. I have been involved with United Way of Santa Barbara County for many years giving Axxess books for donations and have participated in the United Way Executive Club (local leaders who give $1,200 or more each year). For 20 years I have had the privilege of working with many Santa Barbara non-profits by volunteering and serving on committees. Through the work we do at SB Axxess I am acutely aware of the importance of investing in local K-12 students and their families. SB Axxess and United Way's shared goals in improving education...

United Way's Fun in the Sun (FITS) program has truly made an impact in my life. As a FITS camper, I developed self-confidence and built a more mature and positive attitude based on Character Counts. FITS also helped me gain an interest in reading and science, both of which I had largely disliked in school and was struggling with.
These newly developed interests, along with a sense of community that I was able to forge with the staff, Lunch Bunch volunteers and peers in the program, were the foundation for my love of learning, desire to pursue a higher education, and strong sense...

United Way of Santa Barbara County recently sat down with two of our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers from UCSB, Emily Tsai and Andres Gomez, to talk with them about their personal perspective of the program, their experience as volunteers, and the decision that led them to partner up with VITA this year.
1. How have you seen Individuals/Families Impacted by VITA?
Emily Tsai: "A lot of our clients that come have simple returns, but they can wind up spending more than they need to if they have their taxes prepared elsewhere. I am always happy to show our community that...

Interview with Veronica Binkley, Principal of Harding Elementary School
Q: How have you been personally connected to United Way?
My personal relationship with United Way began when I started at Harding Elementary School in 2014. They supported us with [implementation of] Lexia and Reading Plus, which is a large component of our balanced literacy plan. UWSBC and Harding also provide a Kindergarten Success Institute, which smooths the transition into school for our little learners. UWSBC also offers Fun in the Sun, which is an engaging and enriching summer learning program hosted at...

The Charitable Foundation, a unique arm of Berkshire Hathaway, recently donated $2,000 to United Way of Santa Barbara County to help support the Goleta Literacy Partnership, which provides literacy tools and techniques to students in every school in Goleta Union School District.
In partnership with the District, UWSBC is providing students with an individualized, internet-based, adaptive program that moves students forward at their own pace. Also provided: specialized training for teachers, who can give each student individual attention as needed.
